OUR MISSION Empowering Communities, Changing Lives—to work for economic, educational and social progress for African Americans and promote strong, sustainable communities through advocacy, collaboration and innovation. We work with innovative leaders, other organizations and throughout various communities in West Michigan to build effective relationships and advance trailblazing reforms. Together with our partners, we are committed to Grand Rapids’ continued development as a peaceful, just, and thriving region. It is the League’s mission then to provide the means to empower African Americans, other minorities, and the poor to achieve economic self-reliance, parity and civil rights.
About This Cause
WHEN YOU SUPPORT THE URBAN LEAGUE, YOU ARE FUELING AND PROPELLING: A multi-service, non-profit, impact organization created in 1943, with an overarching goal to promote stability among Black and African-American families and others, and racial inclusion in our community. Its range of programs can benefit anyone in need of employment, and career development, housing and homeless prevention, education and scholarship, health, wellness and youth. It serves persons from all economic levels—from area professionals to those living within designated “fragile” and at-risk neighborhoods. The Urban League has always been stalwarts for advocacy on behalf of its constituency. OUR HISTORY – NATIONAL AND LOCAL PRESENCE Grand Rapids Urban League is an historic, civil rights community-based organization committed to improving lives across a dynamic and developing Grand Rapids. Informed and driven by more than seven decades of experience and deep local expertise, our programs address critical issues affecting low-to-moderate income individuals and families--with an intentional and unique focus on African Americans, other minorities, and others at low-opportunity in four broad life domains: Employment, Housing, Education and Health. With its national organization established in 1910, the Grand Rapids Urban League is the city’s oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. Today, the National Urban League spearheads the non-partisan efforts of its 98 local affiliates that provide services to more than two million people nationwide. Grand Rapids Urban League as part of this national network provides direct services, and policy advocacy to help individuals, families, and communities reach their fullest potential.
