Mission Statement

The Detroit Historical Society tells Detroit's stories and why they matter.

About This Cause

The Detroit Historical Society is the only organization dedicated to ensuring that the history of our region is preserved so that current and future generations of Detroiters can better understand the people, places and events that helped shape our lives. The Society operates two museums, the Detroit Historical Museum in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle, and stands as the guardian of more than 250,000 artifacts that represent more than 300 years of metropolitan Detroit’s history. The exhibits and programs that are offered at the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum attract over 120,000 visitors annually. In order to ensure that we are presenting relevant and inspiring stories at the museums, every year the Society opens approximately seven new temporary installations. When combined with our award-winning core exhibits, these installations help to engage our visitors in thought-provoking discussions about the region’s past, present and future. In addition to our walk-in visitors, more than 15,000 schoolchildren take part in the Society’s docent-led school tour programs annually. The tours at both museums are aligned with the Michigan State social studies curriculum standards for third through fifth grades and offer schoolchildren hands-on opportunities to interact with artifacts and exhibits. Throughout the year, the Detroit Historical Society utilizes community-based programs in order to extend its reach and impact its audiences. The organization annually sponsors more than 100 lectures, workshops and tours that bring history into the community – delivering historical content in engaging and innovative ways. With the society’s website, we are able to reach even further, offering content such as the Encyclopedia of Detroit and the Detroit River Watch Webcam, in order to extend the reach of the organization’s impact on those in communities further away. Both of our museums have been recently renovated and remodeled, the Detroit Historical Museum re-opening in the fall of 2012 and the Dossing Great Lakes Museum in the fall of 2013. To date, over 270,000 guests have explored the new attractions at both museums. The Detroit Historical Society is committed to maintaining its momentum throughout the 2015-2016 fiscal year with continued quality exhibits and innovative programming.
