About This Cause
Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan is a youth development, community-impact organization providing after-school and summer opportunities for youth ages 6-18 (grades 1-12). These programs and experiences enable children to achieve academic success, build good character and develop leadership skills and healthy lifestyles. We help kids discover their full potential and grow up to become responsible, self-reliant and caring adults. Our organization operates several Club locations in southeastern Michigan. We’re open when kids need us most - after school, on most school holidays, and all day during the summer. Clubs offer safe places where young people can learn, grow, and succeed. They are led by our skilled and caring Club staff and educational partners. Club members can receive in-person guidance, enrichment activities, mental wellness resources, family support resources and healthy meals and snacks. Every year, we serve thousands of youth between the ages of 6 to 18 at our Clubs, School-Based sites, and Industry Clubs. As soon as our youth members walk through our doors, they enter an environment of stability, consistency, and physical and emotional safety. All of our Clubs run programs designed to be fun and engaging, while building skills and confidence for a successful future. Our creative arts programs help youth unleash their creativity, find their voice, and discover their power for change. From recording their own music, to showcasing their artwork at local events, to taking dance classes with the Detroit Opera House, our Club members can learn valuable new skills while enhancing their confidence, leadership, and professional network. Key programs include BeInstrumental, Fine Arts, Digital Arts, Talent Shows, and Performing Arts. Our career exploration programs introduces our members to careers with earning potential, while preparing and empowering them to become productive, caring, and responsible citizens. Our innovative programs start with middle school youth and extend to high school members, exposing them to professional opportunities and providing them with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to lay the foundation for their future career. Every year, we connect hundreds of teens across the city to work experiences that lead to sustainable and fulfilling careers. We engage teens in programs that prevent truancy and increase school engagement and work with each teen to create an individualized transition plan during their senior year of high school. Key programs include Career Launch, Money Matters, Junior Staff (paid work experience), Data Fellows, and My.Future Essentials. We encourage good character in all our programs, while empowering youth to make a positive impact on their community. Throughout the year, Club members of all ages participate in community service and leadership programs that build their skills while teaching them that they have the power to positively bring about change in their community. Through these experiences, youth develop a strong and positive peer network, a deeper connection to their community, and an understanding of personal responsibility, social justice, and the importance of service to others. By the time they leave the Club at age 18, youth are on a pathway to success. Key programs include Keystone Club, Torch Club, Million Members Million Hours of Service, Youth for Unity, Youth of the Month, and Youth of the Year. We know that education is the key that opens doors to nearly limitless possibilities for young people. With this in mind, BGCSM provides strong academic mentorship and enrichment activities that promote skill building, confidence, and a love of learning in a safe, supportive, and innovative environment. Every day at the Club, our skilled and caring staff provide the guidance and encouragement that young people need to progress grades annually and graduate from high school with a plan for the future. Our members come to us with a broad range of academic skills, interests, learning styles, and perceptions about school, so we employ a similarly wide array of programs and strategies to support them. Key programs include Power Hour (homework help), Project Learn, STEM Enrichment, Diplomas2Degrees, and My.Future. We empower Club members to make healthy choices for immediate and long-term health benefits, while setting themselves up for success in school. Every day at the Club, we provide nutritious snacks, fun, engaging fitness activities, and competitive sports, to get Club members excited about leading a healthy lifestyle. Also, through health education, we teach youth how to nurture their own well-being, helping them succeed in school and grow into happy and healthy adults. Key programs include SMART Moves, Passport to Manhood, SMART Girls, federally funded mentoring and, Triple Play Healthy Habits. Our athletic programs instill the importance of fitness in Club members while helping them build skills, develop confidence, and make lasting friendships. All year long, Club members can participate in a wide variety of sports, including basketball, football, soccer, baseball, and more. Through sports, Club members learn that exercise can be a fun and fulfilling part of a healthy lifestyle. Many of our top athletes go on to receive acceptance and scholarships to both high schools and colleges because of the athletic skills that they developed at BGCSM. Key programs include Triple Play, Walking Club, Nature Club, and organized baseball, basketball, and flag football.
