Mission Statement
Celebrating 56 years of serving families in our community; Spaulding for Children provides foster care, adoption and prevention for families in need. In partnership with diverse communities, Spaulding for Children’s mission is to develop and integrate revolutionary and innovative programs that provide families the support needed to enhance the care of children and youth with the pursuit of permanency. Spaulding believes that building strong families, build strong communities. As the African Proverb states, "It takes a village to raise a child." It is our hope that strong organizations will partner with Spaulding to help build our community stronger, which will help build our nation stronger! Help us help our families, one child at a time! We hold several events to support, encourage and celebrate the families we serve. We look for volunteers to assist at these events, as well as in our offices, daily.
About This Cause
About Spaulding for Children Spaulding for Children is an accredited, licensed, private non-profit child welfare agency established in 1968 when several organizations, each dedicated to improving the lives of children without families, came together. In 2024, we are proud to celebrate 56 years of service to families in our community. Spaulding is a multifaceted organization and was one of the first agencies specializing in finding and training foster and adoptive families for children with disabilities. Through our special training initiatives, we have reached individuals both nationally and internationally. Spaulding professionals managed the National Resource Center for Adoption for 29 years, and in 2002, we were named “Best Managed Nonprofit” by Crain’s Detroit Business. Today, Spaulding for Children is a recognized leader both locally and nationally in placing children who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned. We provide support to children awaiting permanency and offer a range of services to their adoptive, foster, and kinship families. At Spaulding for Children, we believe that every child is adoptable and deserves a permanent family. Our Services The agency comprises three service units: The Academy for Family Support and Preservation, the Spaulding Institute for Family and Community Development, and the heart and soul of our agency, Child and Family Services. The Academy for Family Support and Preservation The Academy believes that permanency planning begins the moment a child enters care. To effectively meet the needs of children and ensure their well-being and stability, child welfare systems must rethink the continuum of care from entry through post-permanency. Child welfare interventions that target adoptive or guardianship homes nearing disruption often come too late, failing to serve the best interests of children and families. There is a need for culturally responsive support services that address the unique behavioral, mental health, and medical challenges that can threaten a family’s stability and long-term commitment. The Spaulding Institute for Family and Community Development Spaulding for Children has a long history of responding to gaps in services and unmet needs of children, families, and communities. The Spaulding Institute for Family and Community Development is a natural extension of this history and our visionary thinking. Over the past decade, Spaulding for Children has expanded its national outreach by developing state-of-the-art training programs and resources that address adoption from the public child welfare system, cultural competency, and permanency and post-permanency services. The Institute aims to continue expanding its impact through: Innovative partnerships and collaborations. Development of resources that reach diverse communities. Utilization of creative venues for disseminating information. The Institute will continue to leverage technology to deliver services, including web-based training, live streaming, e-books, and social media. Child and Family Services Child and Family Services provides foster care, adoption, and post-adoption services. Foster Care: Every child needs a family that ensures their safety, permanence, and well-being. Spaulding for Children recruits and licenses foster parents to care for children who have been abused and neglected and are in the public child welfare system. Our services include placement, case management, home-based visitation, information and referrals, support groups for children and parents, and youth mentoring. Adoption: Spaulding for Children believes there is no such thing as an unadoptable child. We are dedicated to finding families for children in the child welfare system, including older children, children of color, sibling groups, and children with disabilities or challenges. Spaulding does not charge families any fees for adoption services. We provide matching, placement, case management, home-based visitation, education and training, support groups, information and referrals, and opportunities to participate in agency-sponsored activities. Wendy’s Wonderful Kids (WWK): Our recruiters work with children the system has overlooked, ensuring they receive the attention they deserve. Using effective and targeted practices, recruiters focus on finding the best home for each child, starting with familiar circles of family, friends, and neighbors, and extending into their communities. In September 2023, we were awarded a federal grant to enhance post-adoption services nationwide. This project reflects years of expertise, and we are grateful for the opportunity to continue this vital work. Community Engagement We host several events throughout the year to support, encourage, and celebrate the families we serve. Volunteers from our community are welcome to assist at these events and offer their skills in our offices daily. Our annual fundraiser, the Spaulding Scramble, takes place every September. This year, it was held on September 7, 2024, at the Farmington Hills Golf Club. Stay tuned for information about the 2025 event!
