About This Cause
Child and Family Charities is a local nonprofit charity that provides critical services for children, youth and families. For over 100 years, since 1911, Child and Family Charities has been committed to helping vulnerable populations. It is through 6 divisions and 18 programs that our services reach over 7,000 abused, neglected and at-risk children, youth and families in the Greater Lansing Area. Our goal is to help people. Our programs in brief: Behavioral Health –providing help to children, youth, individuals and families through mental health counseling, therapy, assessment and substance abuse treatment. Child Abuse Prevention—Helping low income families by providing a no charge child care center, providing parental guidance and resource referrals and more! Child Welfare—helping foster children through foster family recruitment, training and placement. Making forever families through adoption. Ingham Teen Court—through volunteer high school students who participate as a “Peer Jury” and “Court Bailiff” with a pro bono Judge presiding over Accountability Hearings, Teen Court is helping first time offending youth gain valuable understanding of their wrong-doing and working with the youth and families to prevent repeat offense. TEAM Attendance—Together Everyone Achieves More, through expert counselors, TEAM attendance is making breakthroughs in helping families overcome issues that lead to truancy of their child. This is a highly effective program that works primarily with people of low income in middle schools in the Lansing School District. Angel House—A residential program for pregnant and parenting teens in foster care and their children. Angel House is a program that provides nurture and support as well as therapeutic approach to end cycles of abuse and neglect. This is referral based program. Gateway Youth Services—new to CFC, this program was a standalone agency for over 40 years and came under the CFC umbrella in 2014. Through Street Outreach to homeless and runaway youth in unstable and unsafe housing situations, a temporary shelter support for minors who are unaccompanied by an adult at Higher Grounds, a residential program for teens who are in need of help at Crossroads, TRUE--a support group for the LGBTQ community youth, Gateway Youth Services offers help to youth ages 12 -21 who are homeless, runaway or unsafe in their current living situation. Recently, Child and Family Charities has added a Housing Young Families program from homeless youth who are also pregnant or parenting. This program provides a full spectrum of support to teens to help them learn to live independently and well. The services include counseling, life coach, financial literacy training, budgeting for the family, transportation, housing, utilities and more. The program lasts up to 18 months at which time, the youth should be able to live fully independent of support and can take care of themselves and their child responsibly.
