Mission Statement
The mission of Resilience is to respond to, reduce, and prevent domestic and sexual violence in Ottawa and Allegan counties in Michigan.
About This Cause
Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive behavior that can include physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse. It is a widespread and life-threatening issue that affects millions across the United States, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion or education. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four women and one in nine men have experienced physical violence, sexual violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner. Children often witness or are otherwise exposed to the abuse. The risks associated with the effects of domestic violence on children are well-documented. Developmental delays, difficulty at school, isolation from peers, addictions, and self-harm are much greater for children who have been exposed to domestic violence. In addition, children often learn that it is acceptable to exert control or relieve stress by using violence, or that violence is in some way linked to expressions of intimacy and affection. In fact, a child’s exposure to domestic violence is one of the strongest risk factors for transmitting violence from one generation to the next. Resilience provides supportive services for victims of abuse. 1. Emergence 24 Hour Help Line 2. Advocacy, case management, legal advocacy. 3. Emergency safe shelter for victims and their children. 4. Prevention work engaging schools, universities, churches, and companies to address abuse in their organizations. 5. Engaging Men as Allies in addressing domestic and sexual abuse. 6. Expert trauma therapists work with survivors of abuse and help with those who may be triggered by recent accounts of abuse to girls, women, boys and men. The agency has been intentional in its work with all victims and all genders affected by abuse. Ginny’s Place, Resilience’s emergency shelter, provides critical support for families fleeing domestic violence in a judgment-free and secure, home-like environment. The majority of the survivors we serve have experienced severe, often life-threatening, physical violence at the hands of their abusive partner or ex-partner. They are often victims of stalking or have been threatened with weapons. For those reasons, safety and security at Ginny’s Place is of the utmost importance. In addition to basic needs: a safe place to stay, a warm bed, nutritious food, adequate clothing, personal care items, laundry facilities, and assistance with transportation; each individual and family has a team of support people walking alongside them during their shelter stay. Professional shelter staff provide trauma-informed interventions with adults and children. Using an empowerment-based model, each survivor is considered the expert of their own life. We help each person build resilience, make community connections, and set goals so they can take the necessary steps to begin rebuilding their lives. Services focus on immediate and longer term safety as well as social and emotional well-being.
