Mission Statement
The Corner Health Center's mission is to empower young people, ages 12 through 25, to make healthy choices now and in the future by providing high quality primary health care, education and support for adolescents and their children without regard to income level.
About This Cause
The Corner was founded more than three decades ago by forward-thinking community leaders who believed all teenagers should be able to get the high quality, affordable health care and support they need to grow up to be healthy and productive adults. The Corner's founders were especially concerned with the high rate of teen pregnancy and sought to ensure that low-income young women had access to family planning services to help them break the cycle of poverty. Today, the Corner Health Center provides comprehensive physical and mental health care to young women and men regardless of their ability to pay for it. The Corner also offers health education and positive youth development programs. While the Corner welcomes all young people, most of our patients live in households with extremely low incomes. In fact, 89% of our patients live at or below the poverty level. This affects their health. Youth who struggle daily with problems like hunger, family instability, neglect, abuse and unsafe housing are not easily able to focus on their health and well-being. To meet their complex needs, the Corner brings together a team of specialists in adolescent medicine. We provide care in a welcoming, safe, teen-friendly environment. In addition to clinical care, we offer health education and assistance programs including a Corner Store and food pantry that provides patients with personal care products, household supplies and infant care items. We also offer young people opportunities to develop their leadership skills and potential including a peer health education Theatre Troupe, a Youth Leadership Council, and full participation on our board of directors. Youth involvement is instrumental in determining the direction of the Corner. Unfortunately, health insurance doesn't cover the full cost of the care our patients need. The average cost of a clinical care visit is $175, yet the Corner typically receives less than $100 from insurance and fees. In addition to direct clinical costs, there are expenses for our support and education programs, which play a large part in our patients' successful outcomes. This kind of care and support goes far beyond what health insurance covers. Our challenge is to fill the gap between our revenue and expenses. Gifts from generous and caring people like you make up the difference! The Corner has never had to turn away young people in need because they could not afford to pay for care. Your gift can help ensure we never have to.
