Mission Statement

To build community through discovery, education, and partnerships.

About This Cause

Providing access to lifelong learning, YDL is dedicated to offering programs that create vibrant, resilient and inclusive communities. The library was started in 1868 by six women and 175 books. Today, YDL operates three buildings - a large suburban branch in Ypsilanti Township, an historic building in downtown Ypsilanti and a small one-room branch in Superior Township. Our Bookmobile regularly visits neighborhoods, schools and community events. We serve 88,000 residents - 50% of whom have an active library card - with over 2,300 programs annually. YDL is an integral center of civic life that brings together education, arts and humanities in ways that are shown to support struggling communities. We offer over 3,300 free programs each year. Patrons can explore STEAM and "maker" activities, use our indoor play spaces, hear a concert, meet renowned authors, enjoy a neighborhood BBQ, and receive help with taxes, homework, employment, health and well-being and more. Our collection holds over 360,000 books, CDs, DVDs and an ever-growing array of eBooks, audiobooks, movies, music and more available for download. YDL supports, trusts and respects our patrons and is honored that they do the same for us. To learn more, visit www.ypsilibrary.org.
