Mission Statement
Arts & Scraps, a 25 year old Detroit organization, uses 28 tons of recycled materials annually to help 275,000 children think, create and learn. Students use information, not just memorize, to build and solve their way through challenges. We receive materials from 190+ businesses and 10,000 volunteer hours to prepare those materials for our store, student workshops and kits for groups and individuals. STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) is a particular emphasis.
About This Cause
We make materials and ideas affordable for all. Public Store: 300+ materials sold below cost with free ideas for community organizations, schools, families and individuals. Scrap Packs: Open-ended kits for groups and individuals using recycled materials to teach, encourage creativity and open ended thinking. Curriculum connections that relate each idea to math, science, social studies, language arts and art. Student Workshops: We teach 11 curriculum based lessons at Arts & Scraps or on location with our 26' ScrapMobile bus. Students learn about a topic, create with their own pack of materials to meet a challenge and shop for recycled materials to take home. Event Activities: Family activities at public and private events are custom designed to group needs and themes. Arts & Scraps At Night: DIY Reimagined for the 21+ crowd. Open ended evening of fun and play with recycled materials in a creative evening for all levels of "art" or "non-art" people. Individuals and groups bring their own wine/beer and snacks. Volunteer: Groups and individuals help prepare materials, pack kits stock the store and assist families at events.
