The Detroit Catholic Pastoral Alliance in a non profit organization that is fully committed to improving the life of all people in the City of Detroit through affordable housing, youth programing, senior programing and other programs that effect the life of the everyday citizen
About This Cause
The Detroit Catholic Pastoral Alliance began informally in 1967 with a group of priests who lived and worked in the City of Detroit. In the early 70's lay pastoral assistants and religious women working in City parishes joined the Alliance. They would meet on Tuesday mornings and discuss the scriptures for the following Sunday. They also did advocacy involving issues that related to quality of life in the City. In 1998 when the Cardinal announced the closing of 56 parishes within the City of Detroit, members of this informal group began to organize parishioners in opposition to the closings. Thousand of people attended rallies in an effort to keep their Churches open in the neighborhoods of Detroit. In 1989, 35 churches closed and the Alliance hired staff and called together the people who had been meeting since the announcement of the church closings. This group of parishioners identified issues that would have to be addressed in order to fill the gaps left by the Church closings. Housing, Economic and Commercial Development, Community Action, Senior and Youth Programs, Anti-Racism training were targeted as issues around which the members of the Alliance should rally. Staff was hired, committees were formed and the work began. Twenty-five years later, the Alliance is alive and well and doing development work in the Gratiot Woods Community around its member parish, Nativity of Our Lord. Several city-wide programs are also active including Community Action, Anti-Racism Training, and Urban Parish Coalition, Epiphany Education and a program for Seniors called the Senior Network.
