About This Cause
Sistahs Reachin’ Out (SRO) -- a grassroots, nonprofit organization – was founded in 2000 by a couple of Detroit-native college students and childhood friends to offer free, academic tutoring and access to computer technology to Detroit Public Schools students in the Bethune, King, Cooley and Winship communities on northwest side of the city. Over time, SRO’s programming evolved to include college access initiatives in the Detroit Public and Highland Park School districts that prepared high school students in those communities to successfully access post-secondary education opportunities despite being low-income, minority and/or first in their family to go to college. Reorganized in late 2018 and armed with a new mission, SRO now delivers community programming that sits at the intersection of poverty solution and workforce development that seeks to measurably move Detroit’s growing population of economically insecure residents and families from situations of low-wage living and poverty to situations of economic mobility and security. We do this by, primarily, promoting two pathways that are research-proven to facilitate an escape from economic-insecurity for at-risk, underserved families. Those pathways are higher education attainment and entrepreneurship.
