Mission Statement
Grandville Avenue Arts & Humanities operates the Cook Arts Center and the Cook Library Center. Our mission is to build environments of curiosity and creativity with our neighbors to cultivate inclusion and justice.
About This Cause
Grandville Avenue Arts and Humanities (GAAH) fosters communities of care and belonging at the Cook Arts Center and the Cook Library Center, two facilities on the southwest side of Grand Rapids, where most families are Latinx, Black, or both. Our mission is to build environments of curiosity and creativity with our neighbors to cultivate inclusion and justice. Throughout history, communities of color have experienced various forms of violence and oppression, and our neighborhood is no exception. White supremacy culture makes our neighbors feel frustrated and powerless as we witness the persistence of racialized disparities in our community. Systems have been built in ways that perpetuate cycles of inequality. At GAAH, we push against that culture and engage with our neighbors through the arts and humanities to cultivate curiosity, creativity, and trusting relationships in ways that validate them as they forge new pathways. To effectively carry out our work, we focus on three fundamental strategies: care and belonging, discovery, and advocacy. No matter which program activities happen in our spaces, creating a culture of belonging, learning, and justice creates the conditions for change and positive growth.
