Mission Statement

YouthWorks-Detroit: Equipping youth for fullness of life.

About This Cause

YouthWorks-Detroit was founded as a summer service and internship program for college students in 1995 by Stan Mathay and David O’Connor, two middle school teachers working in Detroit. At school, they noticed a major deficiency in their students’ lives was a lack of committed relationships. From fathers and family, to random changes in teachers, neighborhoods, and schools, their students repeatedly experienced abandonment in their foundational relationships. YouthWorks-Detroit was founded in part to help redeem this void in the lives of Detroit youth. YouthWorks-Detroit is a dba of Detroit Community Outreach, which was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in June, 2000 with the mission of equipping youth for the fullness of life. In the fall of 2000, YouthWorks-Detroit expanded to a year-round organization in Detroit. Now based in the Russell Woods Historic Neighborhood, we aim to provide young people in Detroit with academic success, leadership skills, and committed relationships through after-school programming, summer job programs, service-learning, and mentoring opportunities.
