Mission Statement

New Hope Center for Grief Support is a 501(3)c nonprofit serving the mission of bringing hope, healing, and new beginnings to children, families, and adults impacted by the death of a loved one. Our vision is to see those who have come through our program create a safe, supportive community for others in grief and hele change the way our culture responds to grief and loss. New Hope never wants finances to be a barrier to receiving support at such a difficult time after a loss, therefore, our programs and services are free of charge and open to all.

About This Cause

New Hope was founded in 2000 by Cathy Clough, after she experienced the pain and challenges of being a young widow raising three children in Northville, Michigan. Since then, we have provided bereavement support services to thousands of grievers from Southeast Michigan and beyond. Our goals are to provide age and loss specific peer support to grievers, as well as grief education designed to help understand the uniqueness of each person's grief journey. Our peer-support model is evidence-based and has been shown to be effective at helping grievers learn to cope with their emotions and move forward after the loss of a loved one. We currently provide 29 different age and loss specific ongoing peer support groups, two annual 8- week workshops, five annual seminars, monthly Family Fridays for grieving families, Days to Play, Teen Groups, and a Kid’s Camp every summer at Maybury Farm. We also offer individual support, grief sensitivity training in the community and schools, grief support groups in schools, and community outreach and training throughout the year. We are proud to collaborate with community partners including mental health professionals, health systems, and local school districts to provide grief support to all members of the community and to have 250 volunteers who make our work possible. Most of our volunteers attended our grief programming in the past and now find purpose and meaning in volunteering for New Hope. Our goals are to welcome any person grieving the loss of a loved one, offer ongoing peer support groups which are age and loss specific, enable the individual to learn healthy coping skills, bond with peers, and ultimately, if desired, to experience how working with other grievers in turn offers them hope and healing. We provide direct support services, community outreach, training, and practical resources. Our Program is built on Five Guiding Principles (Pillars): 1. Age and loss specific Peer Support 2. Grief Education build to help understand the uniqueness of each person’s grief journey 3. Connection to others who have experienced loss, including social outings and events 4. Empowerment of volunteer leaders to guide others along the grief journey 5. Service is healing and brings meaning and purpose after loss
