Mission Statement
Our mission is to connect unhoused, housing insecure, and other vulnerable people with the services and opportunities that will foster digital and social inclusion, personal flourishing, and community cohesion. We strive to be the go-to platform for comprehensive, accessible, and reliable access to information about services in the community. We accomplish this by investing in physical infrastructure to reduce barriers to internet access, engaging the tech industry into the local community, and connecting CBOs with users.
About This Cause
ShelterTech is a non-profit, largely volunteer-led organization focused on digital equity and providing access to resources for San Francisco's most vulnerable populations. We do this via our 3 main programs: * SF Service Guide * ShelterConnect * Community Representatives SF Service Guide (SFSG) is an online directory of human services in San Francisco launched in November 2019, currently serving 6,000 unique monthly users. Focused on homelessness and housing insecurity, SFSG covers a variety of other services including access to food and mental health services. We work closely with government and non-profit partners and subject matter experts (SME's) to keep the guide accurate and up-to-date. Via ShelterConnect, we provide free WiFi to people experiencing homelessness or at the temporary shelters in which they stay, resource centers where they spend time, and also people who have found permanent housing in an SRO or other community providing homes for those formerly experiencing homelessness. We have a high level goal of delivering free WiFi to 20,000 residents in the Bay Area by 2025, and have already installed WiFi networks in 26 buildings (temporary shelters and low-income housing) in San Francisco and San Jose, providing free, high speed internet access to over 4,400 residents per year. ShelterTech's team of Community Representatives have experienced homelessness or other forms of insecurity. They engage with volunteers, help build program awareness, and gain insight to inform our programs and products. Community Representatives are key participants in the following events: * Datathons are public events where volunteers from corporate partners and the community at large help verify data in the SF Service Guide. * Outreach events in partnership with local frontline service organizations help connect underserved community members with needed resources. In addition to these three main programs, and as an extension of our SF Service Guide, ShelterTech develops and manages the back-end and data for "White Label" sites including Our415, in partnership with the Department of Children, Youth and their Families; LinkSF (originally developed by ZenDesk and Tenderloin Tech Lab, now 100% based on ShelterTech's data and technology) and a clinician-facing site developed with UCSF doctors and medical students, for use by SF General ER staff members needing to discharge patients directly to service providers rather than just sending them out the door. At ShelterTech, we are inspired every day by the belief that digital equity and connectivity is a right, not a privilege, and that providing people in need with a pathway to build a brighter future is a start at the drive toward a more equitable society overall.
