Mission Statement

Kingmakers of Oakland (KOO) operates from one absolute truth: all Black boys are brilliant, beautiful, and possess innate greatness. Kingmakers of Oakland’s mission is to transform the education system by building the capacity of people to design and implement structures, systems, conditions and culture that improve the educational and life outcomes for Black students.

About This Cause

Kingmakers of Oakland operates from one absolute truth: all Black boys are brilliant, beautiful, and possess innate greatness. Our mission is to dramatically improve educational and life outcomes for Black males by empowering them to enact social change through education, research, training and community mobilization. Through a Targeted Universalism approach, Kingmakers’ impact model works from the frame of “healing the fish while treating the toxic ecosystem.” This two-pronged approach enables us to work with schools and districts to (1) deliver culturally relevant curriculum and pedagogy, (2) support the recruitment and retention of Black male teachers, (3) amplify student voice and agency, and (4) engage parents and families. At the ecosystem level, we (5) drive narrative change and (6) advocate for policy reform. While our work centers Black males, we serve all Black students. This radical love for Black youth is our explicit resistance against widespread anti-Black sentiment experienced by our youth daily. We also recognize that the education systems in which we seek to transform impact our BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) youth and, for this reason, we curate strategies–like the The Fellowship Initiative (TFI) Program–inclusive of the experiences of BIPOC youth. Kingmakers is especially committed to advancing social justice through future economic mobility opportunities available to boys and young men of color. We believe that, when given the opportunity to succeed, young men of color will thrive and ultimately elevate our larger communities. We envision communities where youth use their agency to improve each other’s lives and a transformational education system that engages, encourages, and empowers boys and young men of color to share their genius, creativity, and be their complete selves–college, career and community ready.
