Mission Statement

COA's mission is to help Milwaukee children, teens, and families reach their greatest potential through a continuum of educational, recreational, and social work programs offered at its two urban community centers, rural camp facility, and partnering Milwaukee Public Schools. COA’s philosophy is that the best way to achieve positive outcomes for youth is through a family-centered approach that engages parents in their child’s education, growth, and development. This philosophy is woven through COA's entire programming continuum, which is comprised of three core focus areas: Early Child Development, Youth Development, and Community Development.

About This Cause

COA Youth & Family Centers was founded in 1906 by a dynamic group of women, who sought to provide families in poverty the means to achieve self-sufficiency and raise healthy, productive, successful children. Following the framework of Jane Addams’ Hull House in Chicago, these women established Milwaukee’s first Settlement House and through this holistic model of community service, they provided an array of resources for families. Today, COA programs serve over 10,000 children and families each year. All programs are inclusive, and provided regardless of the participant's ability to pay. Early Child Development Programs include a nationally accredited Early Education Center, a home visiting program focused on engaging parents and children in literacy development and school readiness activities, and parenting and family support programs which are provided at the largest and longest-serving Family Resource Center in Milwaukee. COA’s year-round Youth Development programs serve over 1,200 participants (ages 7-18) annually and incorporate academic enrichment, career exploration and job skills development, personal growth and development, cultural arts, community engagement, and recreation. COA provides overnight camp opportunities for youth from Milwaukee's central city at its Camp Helen Brachman, located in central Wisconsin. COA sends more low-income children to camp on scholarship than any other camping program in the state. COA is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the neighborhoods we serve, and engaging residents in the transformation. Years of experience have taught COA that the populations we serve are deeply affected by a broad range of environmental factors, including widespread crime, violence, unemployment, poverty, racism, and disinvestment. For this reason, Community Development initiatives are essential to COA’s ability to serve children and strengthen families. Just one example of these initiatives is the new primary, preventative healthcare clinic inside COA’s Goldin Center, which provides access to much-needed healthcare services and wrap-around health and wellness programming. This is the only healthcare clinic within a 30-block radius of the Amani Neighborhood. COA’s commitment to providing quality programs is supported by our commitment to financial efficiency and transparency, as over ninety cents of every dollar raised goes directly to support programs.
