Next Door supports the intellectual, physical and emotional development of children by partnering with their families for success in school and the community.
About This Cause
All children deserve a strong start to life. For three decades, Next Door has worked to ensure under-resourced children in Milwaukee receive a strong start to life through high quality early childhood education and family support services. Next Door now serves more than 1,300 Milwaukee children each year – from birth through age five – with high quality early childhood education. We focus on literacy and language development, social-emotional learning, and active parent engagement across our programming. We operate two centers, a home visitation program, and have partnerships with 11 early childhood organizations across Milwaukee. Our work creates much-needed access to high quality early childhood education in Milwaukee. We serve children who live in the city’s most under-resourced neighborhoods. And without high quality centers like Next Door, children may go without the critical early childhood resources that they deserve. Our work is crucial because we serve children – from birth through age five – during their most rapid period of brain development. We surround them with everything they need to thrive in these critical early years with an emphasis on language and literacy development, social-emotional learning, and the physical health needs of young children. We provide children their first school experience and empower them to reach developmental milestones and build confidence in themselves. We partner with their parents every step of the way with year-round engagement opportunities at Next Door, plus community resources to build strong families. And we do this all at no cost to parents. Next Door is strategically located in neighborhoods in Milwaukee where access to high quality early childhood resources is limited. Without high quality schools like Next Door, the children we serve could start kindergarten as many as 18 months behind in their developmental benchmarks – creating a gap that can be difficult to overcome. We are committed to building equity in education by eliminating these opportunity gaps for Milwaukee’s youngest students. Through our critical work, we build strong foundations for the future of our children and Milwaukee. Next Door transforms the lives of Milwaukee’s youngest children by giving them the resources they need to build strong foundations. These foundations promote positive, healthy development and self-esteem, inspire a love of learning early in life, and prepare them for success in school.
