Mission Statement

RELIEVE THE DISTRESSED - The mission of the St. Andrew's Society of the City of Milwaukee is to relieve the distress within our community. We do this by donating to local charities, engaging in fundraising events, and supporting community activities.

About This Cause

The St. Andrew's Society of the City of Milwaukee, the oldest charitable organization in the State of Wisconsin, was founded on January 25, 1859, out of a desire among local Scots to unite for benevolent purposes and to establish a framework for social and cultural activities. It was founded by Alexander Mitchell (grandfather of Gen. Billy Mitchell) and Arthur MacArthur (grandfather of Gen. Douglas MacArthur). Both men served as presidents of the Society in its early years. Recently, the St. Andrew's Society has fundraised for and made significant monetary donations to numerous local charities. Among them are: Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin (funded the construction of a Tiny House in their Gary G. Wetzel Veteran Village in Milwaukee, WI), Hunger Task Force (cash donation to support food distribution), Salvation Army (ringing bells for cash donations), Ronald McDonald House (donation of packages for newborn infants). The Society grants academic and cultural scholarships each year to support Scottish culture. Membership is open to any person of Scottish birth or descent or of Scottish relationship through marriage or anyone who is moved by their love of the Scottish people and all things Scottish.
