About This Cause
Imagine a place where time stands still. A place where the peacefulness of a wooded hillside brings untold tranquility. A place where children can run in open meadows and explore a trail through the trees all in the same morning. A place where springs literally gush out of the hillside, providing fresh water for trout. And a huge wild turtle! Imagine buildings created by hand in the 1860's, still standing strong, furnished with the belongings of those who emigrated here in the 19th century. Imagine all of this in one place...one place called Norskedalen! Norskedalen continues to provide history on the Norwegian American communities in the Upper Midwest, but at the same time works to develop new programming. Education programs providing both in-person and virtual learning are built specifically to assist teachers in meeting state and national academic standards. Heritage classes are in place to teach skills such as lefse making and Hardanger embroidery from one generation to the next, just as our ancestors did. Many of these heritage classes are also available on-line and in-person. Wellness programming is being developed. Miles of trails are continually maintained, with several new additions being built creates a tremendous place for hiking groups. Work with yoga instructors for outdoor yoga classes and workshops is also part of a new wellness program. Norskedalen is 400 acres of wooded bluffs and hillsides, with trails winding through the trees. Walking along any of the trails you'll see wildlife in their natural habitat, flora growing wild and in full bloom, and springs turning into waterfalls that create pools and streams from one end of Norskedalen to the other. Truly a magical place! Stories of the immigrants and their families are told through museum exhibits, festivals, folk art classes, and school programs. Friendships are built through volunteering at Norskedalen, families are connected and renewed, history is brought to life and the environment is preserved and cherished. Your gift will help to maintain this idyllic site and all that it holds. Catastrophic natural disasters have had devastating effects at Norskedalen. July of 2017 brought the first "100 year flood"; August of 2018 brought the "500 year flood" that almost washed Norskedalen and several surrounding communities away; July of 2019 brought yet another "100 year flood; 2020 has inflicted dramatic impact on Norskedalen as the result of a pandemic. Your gift will make such a difference! Thank you so much for thinking of Norskedalen on this day!
