Mission Statement

Safe & Sound unites residents, youth, law enforcement and community resources to build safe and empowered neighborhoods.

About This Cause

Safe & Sound has been dedicated to improving public safety in high crime, low income Milwaukee neighborhoods since 1998. With a budget of approximately $2.2 million and 26 staff members, we engage Milwaukee residents and youth in proactive neighborhood safety and revitalization efforts utilizing an award-winning, three-part approach combining community organizing, youth development and partnerships with law enforcement. These activities aim to improve collective efficacy – the strength of the social fabric - which heavily influences the level of safety in communities. Safe & Sound is unique in the nation as a non-profit, civilian organization that utilizes research and evaluation to inform street level community engagement strategies. Safe & Sound community organizers engage adult residents on their front porches and at community meetings, supporting their priorities, facilitating connections to resources and amplifying their voices. Community organizers help bridge the gap between law enforcement and residents, coordinate events that address neighborhood concerns, build resident capacity, and provide the information and tools that empower residents to make the changes they wish to see. Safe & Sound youth development efforts target disconnected neighborhood youth, providing leadership and engagement opportunities that allow them to be part of the solution in addressing neighborhood challenges. They also seek to reduce the significant divide that exists between youth and adults in Milwaukee through events and meetings that create safe spaces for youth and adults to speak with one another. With the firm belief that positive change can only come with residents and law enforcement work together, Safe & Sound regularly partners with a number of law enforcement agencies and serves as the strategic prevention initiative of the North Central HIDTA. We create opportunities for residents, youth and law enforcement to speak to one another and collaborate in addressing neighborhood concerns while ensuring the resident voice is heard in law enforcement settings. Safe & Sound’s geographic commitments are aligned with five Milwaukee Police districts. Within each district, we selected two priority neighborhoods where we deploy targeted organizing strategies: • District 2: Clarke Square & Layton Boulevard West • District 3: Metcalfe Park & Midtown • District 4: Westlawn and Thurston Woods/Old North Milwaukee • District 5: Amani & Harambee • District 7: Parklawn & Sherman Park One Neighborhood Team is designated to each district: Neighborhood Safety Coordinators support nuisance abatement across the entire police district, while community organizers and youth organizers focus their efforts on two priority neighborhoods. Our neighborhoods were carefully selected based on crime data, housing data, existing assets and available resources. Residents experience poverty, unemployment, poor health outcomes, educational barriers, and an overall lack of resources. More than 75% of residents served are categorized as ethnic minorities, approximately 75% are low to moderate income, and nearly one-third are children ages 17 and under. Additionally, in 2017, we received a five-year federal Drug-Free Communities grant to continue the 27th Street West Drug Free Coalition’s efforts to prevent youth alcohol and substance abuse in Milwaukee’s 53208 zip code.
