Mission Statement

The mission of Artists Working in Education is to provide youth in the Milwaukee area with arts enrichment programs to enhance human potential, advance learning, and cultivate community.

About This Cause

For more than 25 years, AWE has been going out into Milwaukee parks, schools, libraries, and community centers to bring educational visual arts experiences directly to youth through outreach programs. In 1997, artist Barbara Manger started AWE after she contemplated public cuts to art education at the state and local levels during a cross-country bike ride. Upon returning to Milwaukee, she gathered a group of Milwaukee-area artists, art educators, and museum curators to initiate four artist-in-residence programs that paired professional artists with school groups, in order to meet the artistic and educational needs of students who no longer had dedicated art teachers in their schools. AWE became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1998, and in 1999, the Truck Studio program began with a donated van, donated permits from Milwaukee County Parks, and a vision to bring meaningful, drop-in art-based enrichment activities to young people in the parks during the summer. AWE is dedicated to promoting racial equity through our approach to arts outreach that is designed to eliminate barriers to entry, ensuring that everyone can have access to quality arts education experiences.
