Mission Statement
HOPE GOSPEL MISSION (HGM) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization founded in 1998 to provide emergency services and recovery programs to homeless single men and women throughout western Wisconsin. Our purpose is to Rescue, Rebuild, and Renew lives. We operate with Christian and charitable values and provide our services without regard to race, faith, or gender. Hope Gospel Mission has expanded its services over the past 21 years and now includes: 1. A home for homeless single men (Hope Renewal Center for Men), and a home for homeless single women (Hope Renewal Center for Women), and a home for homeless women with children (Hope Renewal Center for Women and Children). 2. Recovery programs designed to help individuals become healthy and self-sufficient, 3. Five social enterprises (Bargain Center [3], Building Hope, Auto Program), and 4. The Solomon Learning Center education center to provide academic, work readiness, and computer training.
About This Cause
The Mission is governed by a volunteer board of directors and is operated by an executive director and four department heads (Program Director, Operations Director, Stewardship Director, and Community Relations Director) who oversee the various functions of the organization. We are a member of the City Gate (with about 300 members in North America) and the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA). PROGRAMS Hope Gospel Mission is responding to the physical, mental, educational, and spiritual needs of homeless individuals in our community by offering personal, practical, life-changing programs: 1. Short-Term Program: The purpose of the Short Stay Program is to provide immediate shelter, clothing and food for individuals while assessing and planning the next step in their lives. This program allows a resident to stay for up to 30 days depending on their needs and situation. Some of the residents in this program are employable and are in between jobs or need a temporary place to stay until they can secure housing. Others want to get a feel of our programs in order to decide if they want our holistic Renewed Hope Program. 2. Renewed Hope Program: Our Renewed Hope Program is our holistic program with eight components designed to provide the assistance necessary to bring a resident up to the levels needed to be healthy mentally, physically, spiritually, so they can be ready to secure their own housing and get and keep a job to be self-supporting. Hope Gospel Mission is the only social service agency in western or central Wisconsin offering a holistic life change program to men and women who are homeless and struggling with addictions and other barriers to being self supporting. 3. Discipleship Transitions Program: After completing the Renewed Hope program and obtaining employment, this program is for the resident who wants to stay connected with accountability and Mission resources and continue to grow and develop themselves. This program is designed to allow a resident to grow and stabilize for an additional year while living in a Hope Gospel Mission facility. Our experienced staff serve the residents in our Renewed Hope Program in the following areas: Academics AODA Financial Life Skills Mental Health Nutrition/Fitness Spiritual Adviser (Chaplain) Vocational Parenting skills The men and women in our Renewed Hope Program attend classes in our Solomon Learning Center about 20 hours a week. Based on the individual’s assessment, we design a plan to provide all the academic assistance necessary to bring the candidate up to employer expected education levels. Employers surveyed indicated that attitude, character, and integrity are the most important things they look for in a new employee. Based on this, the Solomon Learning Center spends much energy in developing these three traits in our program clients. One of Hope Gospel Mission’s core values is to focus on the root issue of each problem, not the symptoms of the problem. In addition to this strong emphasis on attitude, character, and integrity we offer academic training that includes math, grammar, spelling, reading, reading comprehension, vocabulary, computer literacy, financial management, and obtaining a GED or high school diploma. This program often lasts six months, but can go longer depending on the candidate’s educational needs and rate of progress. Concurrent with this educational program the residents receive hands-on work training in our stores for about 20 hours a week for the first six months and then work full-time in our resale stores until they find a job outside of the Mission. Team Leaders and Job Coaches in our Bargain Center and Building Hope stores work with our residents to train and coach them in job skills. The emphasis in this work program is still character and attitude development, but specific work skills are taught during this program. Applied skills are taught such as forklift, customer service, production, cleaning, driving, scheduling, recycling, organizing, pricing, computer software, and basic plumbing, electrical and carpentry. But additionally, the soft skills are taught that employers rank higher than prior experience. These are character, attitude, integrity, leadership, teamwork, efficiency, work ethic, interpersonal skills, conflict management, overcoming barriers to employment, interviewing skills, application skills, and resume skills. This program prepares the client to get and keep the job they want, becoming the best employee they can be.
