Mission Statement

The Minnesota State Horticultural Society’s mission is to cultivate a healthy, diverse, and sustainable community of northern gardeners. Our five-year strategic plan which was approved in January of 2021 includes 4 key initiatives: 1. Expand the reach and scope of our inspirational horticultural education; 2. Advance our programs and partnerships in health, environment, equity, and community; 3. Grow and strengthen our connections with members; and 4. Increase our financial and operational capacity to sustain growth.

About This Cause

The Minnesota State Horticultural Society (MSHS) was founded in 1866 as an association of fruit growers who took on the challenge of growing apples and other fruits in our challenging northern climate. Two years later, the association changed its name to recognize the importance of all phases of horticulture development in rural and urban Minnesota. Today, MSHS serves northern gardeners in Minnesota and additional cold climate regions and is a resource to 9,600 members and subscribers--individuals, families, garden clubs, plant societies, community gardeners and the horticulture industry. We have published Northern Gardener magazine, which reaches a readership of over 14,500 gardeners, since 1896. We serve the broader community through our outreach programs: workshops and webinars, website, Resource Hub, E-newsletter, exhibits and events, Minnesota Green program, Garden-in-a-Box Program, and the MN SEED Project.
