About This Cause

PHYLLIS WHEATLEY COMMUNITY CENTER ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW Phyllis Wheatley Community Center (PWCC) opened its doors in 1924 as a settlement house. The center was the first agency in the Twin Cities dedicated to meeting the human service needs of a growing African-American community. Throughout its history, Phyllis Wheatley has responded to the needs of our community by remaining agile, listening to our clients and staff, and responding to rising needs by adapting our services and programs to address the ever-changing challenges faced by our North Minneapolis neighbors. The agency is named in honor of Phillis Wheatley, the 18th century enslaved girl, whose remarkable true story shows that in spite of what is happening on the outside, there is something within that can help one prevail. For us, Phyllis Wheatley's grit and tenacity is representative of the Northside community and its fierce, tireless, and relentless pursuit of justice in the face of adversity. Today, PWCC creates pathways for individuals to discover their strengths and take control of their futures through programs addressing the needs of children, youth, and individuals, and families. PWCC celebrates its 100-year anniversary in 2024. PROGRAMS EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (Preparing children for kindergarten and beyond) Mary T. Wellcome Child Development Center Our community-based early childhood education center provides comprehensive high-quality services to children ages 16 months to five years old. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT (Helping school-aged children stay on track) be@school Program Through the use of mentorship, goal setting for success, fun incentives, and referrals for families needing assistance, our truancy diversion program helps kids in kindergarten through eighth grade stay in school. This is a collaborative effort with the Minneapolis Public Schools and the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. Hope for Youth Our diversion program teaches teens how to be better decision makers, increase their confidence, and create and maintain healthy relationships. This program is open to boys ages 12-17 who have had their first contact with law enforcement. ADULT EMPOWERMENT (Helping adults improve their lives and relationships) HOPE Domestic Violence Recovery We empower women and men to advocate for themselves and learn conflict and stress management skills. Using asset-based techniques, support group participants develop a strong foundation and create support systems to meet life’s challenges. Our Quality Parenting program reunited families separated by CPS intervention and helps prevent it from happening in the first place. Camp Katharine Parsons Restoration Project Camp Katharine Parsons Restoration Project is a capital campaign to restore PWCC's youth day camp, giving at-risk urban kids a chance to learn environmental stewardship and important developmental lessons. ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS Community Resource Services Our one-stop community resource center connects people to the help they need wherever they are on their journey. Community members benefit from holistic resource navigation, support for housing, employment, mental health, transportation, parenting, and more. ManCode Mentoring A partnership with Microsoft and 100 Black Men of the Twin Cities, this 3-day technology conference provides technological, educational, and life skills training and opportunities for young minority boys in underrepresented areas. Women's Wealth & Equity Building Initiative The Women's Wealth Building Initiative provides single Black mothers with financial skills to help them stabilize their family finances and begin to build generational wealth through education and homeownership. Centennial Capital Campaign Funds support the Camp Parsons Restoration Project and Phyllis Wheatley Community Center's facilities and capacity building for sustainability. PWCC celebrates its 100th year of service to the North Minneapolis Community on October 17, 2024.
