Mission Statement
The Guthrie Theater engages exceptional theater artists in the exploration of both classic and contemporary plays, connecting the community we serve to one another and to the world. Through its extraordinary artists, staff and facility, the Guthrie is committed to the people of Minnesota and, from its place rooted deeply in the Twin Cities, influences the field as a leading 21st-century arts organization.
About This Cause
Each season, the Guthrie creates and presents exceptional theatrical productions of the classics and new works. We strive to engage a diverse audience that includes patrons of all ages and abilities and to connect audiences and artists across generations and cultures through the power of theater and the critical conversations it inspires. Our education programs empower teachers, students and life-long learners to utilize theater as a tool that can develop imagination, collaboration, creativity and reflection. We work to sustain the Guthrie as a cultural asset for our community and region through sound financial management, training the next generation of actors, and audience development. Education Our school-based partnerships touch every corner of the state and region and serve more than 60,000 young people each year. Extensive research indicates a strong link between arts education and academic achievement, especially for low-income children and teens. The Guthrie’s education programs provide students with access to significant theatrical work on our stages and superb arts learning opportunities. Minneapolis Public School Partnership In the 2014-2015 season, the Guthrie has expanded its offerings by partnering with The Minneapolis Public School system to offer 1,200 tickets, educational resources and transportation at no cost to underserved schools. Access Services The Guthrie offers 60 or more performances with Open Captioning, ASL Interpretation and/or Audio Description throughout the season. Assistive listening devices, Braille and large-print materials are also available for all performances. More than 35,000 people with disabilities take advantage of these services each year. Artistic Training The University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater B.F.A. Actor Training Program is dedicated to developing the mind, body, voice and spirit of the actor/artist/scholar. Our goal is to provide the foundation that inspires our students to begin life-long journeys of learning and artistic expression. Similarly, a Guthrie Experience for Actors in Training is designed to develop and nurture a select group of theater students in their master’s program through various training workshops, discussions and individual working sessions.
