About This Cause

Semcac is a nonprofit organization established in 1966 under the Economic Opportunity Act to fight America's War on Poverty. Semcac's mission is to empower and advocate for people to enhance their self-sufficiency by maximizing community resources. Semcac is a Community Action agency serving southeastern Minnesota. Services are provided in the designated MN counties of Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Houston, Mower, Steele, Winona with limited services offered in the counties of Goodhue, Rice, Olmsted, Wabasha and Waseca. Semcac was established in 1966 and has been helping people and changing lives for over 54 years. Semcac operates over 25 programs within the following departments: Energy - which includes programs such as Energy Assistance (EAP) and Weatherization; Housing - which includes programs such as home-owner rehab loans, Small Cities Development Program projects, housing developments; Semcac Clinic - which includes family planning health services to men, women and transgender patients such as cervical cancer screenings, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, community education and contraception; Head Start - which includes Head Start Center classroom sites as well as Early Head Start home-based services; Transportation - which includes public bussing via Rolling Hills Transit and the Volunteer Driver Program; Senior Services - which includes Senior and Caregiver Advocacy, Senior Dining (congregate dining), Meals on Wheels; Outreach & Emergency Services - which includes homelessness prevention, Freeborn County Homeless Shelter, four food shelves located in Rushford, Preston, Kasson and Caledonia, Minnesota, Semcac county contact offices in 7 counties, budgeting counseling/financial literacy, crisis assistance, car repair program, rural housing stability, and much more! Semcac employs approximately 240 employees throughout the service area in southeastern Minnesota and is dedicated to helping people during their time of greatest need. Semcac assists approximately 25,000 people, annually. Our staff works with hundreds of partners in the communities to ensure clients are receiving the help they need, comprehensively.
