Mission Statement

Pillsbury United Communities is a multi-service, social entrepreneurial organization that addresses social problems with creativity, innovation, partnerships, and a relentless drive for change. Pillsbury United Communities’ mission is to create choice, change and connection for the 54,000 individuals that walk through our doors each year. Founded in 1879 to address the absence of services for the growing immigrant community, today Pillsbury United Communities is a network of neighborhood centers, public charter schools, and social enterprises. Innovation is at the core of our work, and programs are often co-developed with participants. The result is a vast array of programs and services that provide a purposeful journey to self sufficiency. PUC's core programmatic work and services encompass five impact areas that are aligned with the most significant social determinants of health: Education, Youth & Family, Wellness & Nutrition, Employment & Training, and Asset Creation.

About This Cause

At PUC, we believe that impactful community work must extend beyond our doors and into the communities that are faced with extreme disparities, and we must recognize that each community is rich with assets and opportunities. The strength of our organization is grounded in our neighborhood centers that have established a reputation for responsiveness, effectiveness and relevance. PUC operates five neighborhood centers, a leadership development center, a professional live theatre, eight social enterprises; and authorizes eleven public charter schools. PUC works strategically, creatively and deliberately towards actualizing our vision: all individuals and families are well and living in thriving communities. PUC is driven by the communities it serves, backed by research, and rooted in settlement house heritage. Its mission is underscored by the conviction that communities guide their own successful transformation. As a result, PUC's programmatic work and services are relevant to the issues and desires of each community. PUC’s goal is to vitalize healthy communities by creating, innovating, and collaborating with diverse individuals and groups; providing open, attractive, welcoming, and safe spaces for people to participate, connect, and organize; and bridging the gaps between those who make decisions and those who are affected by them. The interconnected nature of PUC’s programs sets the Agency apart as not merely serving the community, but constructing the foundation on which promising communities thrive. PUC's scope of services encompasses five areas of impact, including: - Education: Ensuring that all youth are engaged and prepared for life. PUC delivers after school, summer and school-success programs to 1,300 youth per year. Education programming includes mentoring, career counseling, support groups, technology training, college scholarships, and intervention to children in grade school that demonstrate behavioral issues and their families. - Youth & Family: Ensuring that individuals and families build strong links, bridges and bonds. Children and families benefit from family and parent support programs, help with navigating school systems, and access to basic needs. Crisis care is provided to overwhelmed parents, and family violence prevention, intervention, and advocacy are delivered to immigrants. - Employment & Training: Ensuring that individuals have access to employment and skills to succeed. Participants develop work skills and access viable employment opportunities. Participants also access legal services and free tax preparation to ensure access to Earned Income Tax Credits. - Asset Creation: Ensuring that communities experience significant economic, social, cultural change. PUC operates several business ventures created and managed by community members. PUC provides leadership and career training through eight social enterprises, including Sisterhood of the Traveling Scarf, Triple C Coffee Cart, Full Cycle Bike Shop, Pillsbury House Theatre, Interpreting Agency, Breaking Ice, Charter School Authorization, and the Urban Institute. - Wellness & Nutrition: Individuals and families are healthy and well. PUC provides family healthcare advocacy, health insurance enrollment, and medical interpretation and translation. PUC has three food shelves to meet the nutritional and health needs of the multicultural populations they serve. PUC also delivers community health education that is culturally relevant and health workshops for people of all ages. PUC is located throughout Minneapolis, serving diverse communities at Waite House, Pillsbury House + Theatre, Brian Coyle Center, Oak Park Youth and Family Center, Camden Neighborhood Center, and the Urban Institute for Service and Learning. These community centers are located in the Phillips, Central/Powderhorn, Cedar Riverside, Near North, and Camden neighborhoods, some of the most diverse communities in Minneapolis. PUC views communities and individuals first in terms of their valuable aspects, supporting and expounding upon natural assets to provide paths to health and wellness in a holistic way; meeting unmet immediate needs while developing leadership skills, creating paths to self sufficiency, and educating about the civic issues and systems that affect local communities. This approach includes initiatives that further gender and racial equity, economic stabilization resources, and a side-by-side process of identifying and problem solving place-based issues that impact a particular neighborhood or resident group. Demographic Data — Because PUC is deeply rooted in five urban core communities, staff works with multiple, diverse constituencies including immigrants and refugees from Latin America, East Africa, and Asia; and African American, Asian, Native American, Multiracial and Caucasian Minneapolis residents. The common factor that ties the groups together is the existence of social and economic inequalities rooted in educational, racial, health and opportunity disparities. An equally common factor among constituents is passion for justice and strong desire to change systems, policies, and processes that prevent people from fully participating in their communities. In 2013, PUC worked with 54,550 individuals. 19% were under 18 years; 65% were ages 18-64; and 16% were 65+ years. The population is diverse, with % of individuals identifying as people of color: 13% African, 20% African American, 3% American Indian, 6% SE Asian/Pacific Islander, 19% Hispanic/Latino, and 5% Multi-racial or Other (7% is race unknown). 60% are at 200% of poverty or below.
