Mission Statement

The Legal Rights Center provides comprehensive, problem-solving, assistance to its low-income representation clients, in conjunction with outreach that enables wide community access to justice and restorative justice services. All services are at no cost. All of the organization's projects share the vision of improving the experience of the justice system for oppressed communities, if not proactively solving problems that prevent involvement in the justice system in the first place. Underlying organizational values emphasize that cultural communities and families can best support their own members in problem-solving, and everyone benefits when they are allowed this opportunity. When it comes to opposing mass criminalization, the Legal Rights Center is not just on the front lines, they are on all of the front lines.

About This Cause

The Legal Rights Center runs two programs: the Community Defense Program, and Youth: Education, Advocacy & Restorative Services. All client services are provided free of charge. The Community Defense Program (CDP) provides free criminal and juvenile defense representation services to low-income clients. Attorneys are teamed with Community Advocates, the latter providing culturally-specific assistance to populations who may be challenged by systemic biases yet need problems solved and rights protected. Through a long established outreach and education program, staff are available at community centers on a weekly basis. The program also provides community expertise in addressing problems related to overcriminalization and the long-term impacts of criminal records. In addition to advocacy and education efforts, we provide clients with full or brief representation for expungements, or to challenge licensing disqualifications or other excessive impacts of criminal history. The Youth: Education, Advocacy & Restorative Services (Y:EARS) program provides representation in juvenile court, and neutrally facilitates school-based Family Group Conferences (a strengths-based restorative method) in the aftermath of delinquency, truancy, or school discipline problems (or a combination) as a positive alternative to ineffective punitive outcomes. From the vantage point of practicing across justice and education systems, the program’s attorneys participate in many committees and networks, make presentations, and advocate for best practices.
