Mission Statement
Our Justice works to ensure that all people and communities have the power and resources to make sexual and reproductive health decisions with self-determination and dignity.
About This Cause
Our Justice was founded in 1967 by a small group of doctors, clergy, and community members to assist Minnesotans in accessing abortion. We have a history of breaking down barriers to abortion access, as our founding members provided abortion referrals before Roe v. Wade and established an abortion assistance fund in response to the Hyde Amendment. Over 50 years later, we continue their legacy with our direct aid and advocacy programs, working to meet people’s immediate financial needs for abortion care while fighting against laws and policies that make abortion care inaccessible. Our Programs include: Abortion Assistance Fund + Lodging: We provide direct financial support and overnight lodging assistance for people within and beyond Minnesota seeking an abortion. In 2019, we pledged support for 241 people, in 2020 this grew to 455, and so far in 2021, we have pledged support for over people. Curbside Plan B: In the last year we have distributed over 1,000 boxes of free Plan B to individuals and partner organizations to share, including the Indigenous People’s Task Force, Sex Workers Organizing Project, and South Side Harm Reduction. Legal Advocacy: As plaintiffs in Doe v. Minnesota, we’re working to remove 14 unconstitutional abortion restrictions that disproportionately impact low-income people, people of color, and youth. This work builds on our previous work as plaintiffs in the Doe v. Gomez case, which solidified a constitutional right to abortion access in Minnesota – one of the strongest in the country. Grassroots Organizing + Coalition Work: As a leader in UnRestrict Minnesota, we’re educating and mobilizing our communities to fight for Reproductive Justice in the Minnesota Legislature and beyond. Together, we mobilized 200 people for the 2021 Lobby Day this past March and introduced the Patient’s Right to Know Act, a bill that would repeal a requirement for doctors to deliver medically inaccurate information to patients seeking abortion care. Mutual aid and healing: Healing and community care are essential elements of our vision for Reproductive Justice. In response to the uprisings in Minneapolis in the summer of 2020, we worked with community partners to put together with care kits for BIPOC organizers and support a food pantry serving families in South Minneapolis. We continue to work in collaboration with Reproductive Justice organizations to care holistically for the communities we serve.
