Mission Statement
Our mission is "Together with families and community, we nurture children, build on family strengths, and find alternatives to violence." SSFNC serves families with young children who are living in poverty and are at risk for abuse and neglect. Since 1974, we have supported some of the most underserved families in the Phillips and surrounding communities of South Minneapolis.
About This Cause
Southside Family Nurturing Center provides high quality therapeutic early childhood education in our licensed, NAEYC accredited, and Four Star Parent Aware-rated child care center for children ages 16 months - 5 years old. For children who need additional supports, we offer speech, occupational, and play therapy onsite and during school hours. In conjunction with our services to children, we also work intensively with parents and other family members through weekly home visiting, regular family events, case management, and referrals to community resources. We partner with community agencies to provide additional services such as arts programming, yoga sessions, and health services. The families that seek our services live in moderate to severe poverty and are experiencing multiple stressors including housing insecurity, mental health issues, family violence, child abuse and neglect, and chemical dependency. The philosophy that has guided our programs for over forty years is that when we build trusting relationships with all members of a family, we can help stabilize families and give them the tools and skills necessary to build brighter futures for themselves and their children. There are no other therapeutic early childhood programs in the Phillips Community that: include all family members as active participants; provide an early childhood curriculum designed specifically to support children living in poverty and experiencing trauma; support families at risk for abuse and neglect as they identify their stressors and work towards family unity; employ a multicultural approach; and offer all services, including meals and transportation free of charge.
