About This Cause

Forty-five years ago, a group of concerned citizens, law enforcement officers, and educators came together to create the Lakes Center for Youth & Families (LC4YF), a diversion service to keep first time young offenders from re-offending. Throughout the years, the programs grew to include afterschool enrichment, leadership and jobs programs, mentoring, chemical health, addiction and parenting support, and intervention services, all in response to evolving community needs. Who we provide services for changed over the years as well, moving from only addressing the needs of troubled kids to having programs that help all youth seeking community connections - and their parents as well. The mission of LC4YF is to “Ensure the Success of Youth.” We do this by strengthening positive connections and relationships youth have with their families and their community. Youth who show up at LC4YF are listened to and empowered with skills to help them shape their futures. The reasons they come to LC4YF may vary – they may want to find ways to help their community, learn how to find and keep a job, develop stronger social skills, build better relationships with their families, or get beyond addiction. Whatever the reason, there’s a place for them at LC4YF. We are committed to making sure every young person that enters our doors can find the resources they need to make their life better. LC4YF is the only youth development organization in the service area that provides an array of supportive programs and services based on evidence-based research that contribute to improved long-term outcomes including: healthy relationships with family, mentors and teachers, meaningful involvement in their communities and the world and relevant learning experiences that is within their world, of their choosing and free from judgment. The result is that when youth have healthy relationships, meaningful involvement and relevant learning experiences, they grow up able to care for themselves, care for others and contribute to the world in a positive way.
