Mission Statement

Women of Nations provides culturally specific emergency services and support to all who have experienced trauma and domestic, sexual, and dating violence, and empower Native American communities to put an end to all forms of violence through education and prevention.

About This Cause

Women of Nations was founded in 1982 and runs one of the only Native American-focused shelters in Minnesota that is not based on a reservation. Although there is an emphasis on services to Native Americans, Women of Nations works with clients of all races, ethnicities and cultures. The Eagles’ Nest Shelter is is a 44-bed emergency housing facility for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Many women arrive at the shelter directly upon release from the emergency room; others are referred through social service agencies or crisis hotlines. While clients reside at the shelter, they attend psycho-educational workshops, meet with Case Managers to discuss legal options and set and work on goals for self-sufficiency and improvement of their well-being. The Eagle’s Nest Shelter was founded to provide a safe and secure environment to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and dating violence. The facility has closed-circuit television surveillance, a full perimeter fence that surrounds the building and parking lot and all entrances are locked from the outside, with a video-intercom paging system for access. Many amenities such as personal hygiene items, clothing, transportation and access to computers and internet are provided through donations and additional grant funding. Women of Nations works with clients through direct and referral services that respond to the needs of the entire family. Basic needs such as housing, food, clothing and personal supplies are provided directly, at the emergency housing site. Support for education advancement, employment, stable housing, emotional/mental health support, social services and advocacy are provided through a combination of on-site and referral services. Women of Nations strives to provide comprehensive services that include parenting support, assistance in achieving financial stability, health care and assistance in applying for public benefits. Women of Nations also runs a Community Advocacy Program. This program supports survivors of interpersonal violence and provides resources and legal advocacy for clients who are not in or have transitioned out of the Eagle’s Nest Shelter program. CAP also provides outreach and community education on domestic violence and abuse. Support is given through legal, social services and judicial advocacy as well as obtaining Orders for Protection. Informing and educating the public on domestic, sexual and dating violence is a main focus of the Community Advocacy Program. Many communities struggle with acknowledging and addressing the problem of violence. Women of Nations provides free presentations to communities, neighborhood groups, cultural groups, colleges, universities and organizations. These presentations educate people on the universality of violence and how culture influences perceptions and reactions to violence, the issues that victims face when trying to flee violent environments, resources for victims and communities, and the programs that Women of Nations offers.
