Mission Statement

McLeod Food Shelf works to eliminate hunger and food insecurity as well as improve the health and well-being of our community through equitable access to healthy & nutritious foods, community education, and advocacy.

About This Cause

McLeod Food Shelf envisions a community where everyone has access to good-quality nutritious food, understands the consequences of hunger and poor nutrition, and is committed to creating a stronger, healthier community. We also recognize the dignity of all people and believe food is an essential need. Our Guiding Principles • McLeod Food Shelf is responsible and accountable for respectful, effective, and efficient avenues of food procurement and distribution. • McLeod Food Shelf incorporates a dignified and client-centered model where nutrition, health, and education opportunities are shared. • McLeod Food Shelf believes innovation and community collaboration are essential to support initiatives and meet challenges. McLeod Food Shelf is committed to welcoming and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of its service to the community. We recognize that hunger can affect everyone regardless of age, gender, sexual identity, race, nationality, disability, military association, familial status, religion, ideology, or acceptance or participation in any public assistance program, and therefore seek to serve all in need. Because we learn and serve better in a community full of unique experiences, insights, and opinions, MFS welcomes a diverse and inclusive group of staff, volunteers, and board members as we commit to excellent service and a safe environment for all. Provisions of this basic human need allow all who receive, FOOD for TODAY and HOPE for a brighter FUTURE. Since 1983, millions of meals have been provided with the generous support from the local community. In the first year, 109 households were served with the number stretching to as many as 1,857 distinct households. In the most recent year (2023), 13,715 distributions provided enough food to prepare nearly 524,000 meals. Well over 714,000 pounds of food were distributed in and around McLeod County. “Supermarket style” shopping is available in Glencoe, Hutchinson, and on the mobile outreach bus. The quantity of items is determined by household size. Foods are categorized according to SuperShelf Stocking Standards and include a variety of fruits & vegetables, proteins, grains, dairy, cooking & baking items, meal & side-dish options, and bakery & deli items. In addition, weekly distributions of fresh produce are encouraged. MFS Glencoe also serves as a Nutrition Assistance For Seniors Program (NAPS) Distribution Site each Wednesday following the first Tuesday of the month. NAPS eligibility is based on age and income. WE WORK TOGETHER! McLeod Food Shelf is a community-based resource because of generously donated FINANCIAL & FOOD support as well as TIME, and TALENT! Every dollar, every pound, and every hour matter to us! FOOD DONATIONS are welcome during operating hours at both Distribution Sites. Shelf-stable, frozen, refrigerated, and fresh items are accepted. McLeod Food Shelf incorporates a dignified, client-centered distribution model and therefore only accepts clean, sealed, and properly labeled foods. Homemade/processed foods are not accepted. Per guidelines, foods up to 3 years past the Best-By date printed on intact packaging are accepted. FINANCIAL SUPPORT allows for the purchase of items such as milk, cheese, eggs, meat, and bulk staple items available through food banks and local grocers. Cash also covers the operating expenses of McLeod Food Shelf such as rent, utilities, staff wages, and office supplies. VOLUNTEERS give of their time and talents by guiding clients through shopping, picking up retail food rescue, sorting donations, stocking shelves, organizing and supporting food drives, as well as special onsite and community-based projects.
