Mission Statement
Alliance Housing was born out of the vision of St. Stephens’ Catholic Church volunteers and emergency shelter staff and residents who wanted to create tangible, long term housing solutions for homeless families and individuals. The nonprofit (not religious affiliated) organization was incorporated in 1991 and took advantage of vacant and available properties at low cost in South Minneapolis. Alliance continues to honor its history by developing housing solutions for homeless, poor and other individuals shut out of market opportunities.
About This Cause
PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES Affordable Housing Development and Management Alliance Housing has developed 437 housing units, all in Minneapolis. • 100 units are scattered among 22 properties. Alliance owns and manages the properties. • 126 units are in 2 apartment buildings. Alliance is the owner and contracts with an independent property manager. • 211 units are sober supportive housing units. Alliance Housing was a co-developer, is a part owner, and has no active role in management. Alliance rents to tenants that other landlords turn down because of low income, poor rental and criminal histories: • Without stable housing these individuals are unable to hold down a job or get their children to school. • Tenants receive support and flexibility so they can maintain their housing. • Many of the tenants are low wage and seasonal workers - essential to our economy but unable to afford market rent apartments. Supportive Housing for Families In 2011, Alliance started an innovative supportive housing program as a part of its north Minneapolis housing portfolio to address longer term housing stability issues for families. The Northside Supportive Housing for Families program is helping families learn skills to become financially independent. • Tenants learn how to maintain stable housing and acquire training and education in order to earn the kind of income that will be required to sustain it longer term. • Alliance pays a housing subsidy when a family is working rather than unemployed – the exact opposite of most housing subsidy programs. The intent is to break the current pattern of offering short term subsidies without family support that inevitably leads to future repeated homelessness. FINANCES Alliance’s annual budget is $1.2 million: 55% of the operations are related to property management, 15% to services and 30% to real estate development, fundraising and administration. Our income comes from 6% individual gifts, 10% foundations and churches, 27% government and 50% rents.
