Mission Statement

Neighborhood Development Center's mission is to "Empower entrepreneurs and community partners to transform their low-income neighborhood economies from within."

About This Cause

NDC believes that “concentrated poverty needs concentrated opportunity”™ and this is why we have designed and refined four special programs—Entrepreneur Training, Business Lending, Technical Assistance, and Business Incubators—to empower low income neighborhood residents to start and grow their own businesses, rise from poverty, and revitalize and transform the economic environment of their own neighborhoods from within. Our culturally competent Entrepreneur Training, which is now offered in five languages to 300 aspiring entrepreneurs of different ethnicities every year, is specially designed to be “place based” within underserved neighborhoods, and it is deployed in partnership with other community based organizations for maximum community reach and effectiveness. Our Business Lending program addresses the needs of new and existing entrepreneurs who cannot obtain conventional bank loans and do not wish to be burdened long term with high business debt. Through this program, around 60 businesses receive loans ranging from $5,000 to $250,000 every year. Our Business Lab offers over 4,500 hours of Technical Assistance every year to both new and growing businesses to teach and improve management, financing, and accounting practices; increase visibility, clients, and personal and business income; decrease costs; and improve marketing and sales through better advertising, branding, and social media tools, among others. This program is essential to starting new businesses, growing and maintaining existing businesses, and turning around struggling businesses. Lastly, NDC’s Business Incubators program, which now includes over 120 businesses in five buildings in Minneapolis and St. Paul, provides loans and technical assistance, peer support, a ready clientele, and high visibility in specific commercial corridors for successful economic transformation. Overall, all four programs are highly integrated into a unique hub and spokes model linking the energy and talent of people to the vitality of place, and creating a critical mass of visible entrepreneurship, local jobs, role models and community leaders, wealth and wellbeing, and safe family and community gathering places: a visible and accessible concentration of opportunity and hope for all neighborhood residents, and a practical, proven way of addressing economic disparities in low income neighborhoods. For the last 26 years NDC has successfully helped people—primarily persons of color in underserved neighborhoods—open their own businesses, become self sufficient, and revitalize their neighborhoods, both economically and socially.
