Mission Statement

STARBASE Minnesota is: a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, founded in 1993 whose mission is to educate and inspire youth in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Since 1993, STARBASE has served over 50,000 Twin Cities youth. STARBASE is a program of the Department of Defense and supported by the Minnesota National Guard who provide access to an exciting, technology-rich aerospace environment, inkind services and volunteers to the program. STARBASE partners with six area school districts to provide STEM programming; local STEM corporations team with STARBASE to provide financial and inkind support, and volunteer scientist and engineers to programs. STARBASE has a 21-member Board of Directors with backgrounds in business, education, military and government. There are 55 STARBASE locations in 40 states in the United States and Puerto Rico.

About This Cause

STARBASE Serves over 3,500 students/year. In FY 14, STARBASE served 3,454 students from nearly thirty Twin Cities schools. In FY14, of the students served during the school year programs of STARS 1 and STARS 2, 71% were children of color; 63% low income; 30% were ELL. Students learn: scientific and engineering design concepts integrated with math and technology in the realm of learning how to be engineers, then getting to and exploring Mars. They conduct experiments like real scientists and engineers to learn about Newton’s Laws, forces of flight, properties of air, states of matter, friction, heat transfer, mass, weight and the vacuum of space. They gain skills in coordinate graphing, plotting, geometry, median, mode, probability, volume, measurement, ratios, range, estimating, and scaling. Students learn to think like scientists and engineers: using rovers, wind tunnels, vacuum pumps, simulations, temperature probes, rockets, gliders, engineering design software and other advanced technologies. They explore careers and interact with members of the MN National Guard and local scientists and engineers to see, first-hand, how STEM is used in the workplace. Student & Teacher Results: (measured by pre and post tests; surveys and evaluations; Wilder Study) • 97% students increased knowledge / skills in science, math, technology and engineering • 83% average improvement pre to post test; (84% 4th gr; 85% 5th gr; 76% summer 4-6th gr) • 98% students reported STARBASE made learning fun; 97% students want to return • 93% students reported increased interest in STEM; 55% interested in pursuing a STEM career • 99% classroom teachers reported gains in own knowledge/teaching skills • 91% teachers rated STARBASE excellent; 9% very good; 100% want to return. • 8-10 years later, 99% of former STARBASE students surveyed thought STARBASE was a valuable learning experience; 83% felt the program helped them understand STEM better and 79% said it increased their interest in STEM; additional positive in on time high school graduation and enrollment into college.
