Mission Statement
Each year, Children’s Law Center of Minnesota provides hundreds of abused and neglected youth with trustworthy, high quality legal representation, helping them navigate the child welfare and foster care systems. With a dedicated corps of 300 volunteer pro bono attorneys, we help improve and stabilize the lives of foster care youth—kids who might otherwise be at serious risk of homelessness, school failure, substance abuse, incarceration or a lifetime of dependence on public assistance. Children’s Law Center of Minnesota promotes the legal rights and well-being of children and youth. CLC’s staff and volunteers provide direct representation of children and youth, primarily in the child welfare system, and advocate for changes in the systems that affect their lives.
About This Cause
Imagine, as a child, being pulled from your home, school, friends and siblings. Everything you own is thrown into a bag and you are sent to stay with strangers, unsure of what will happen next. If you are lucky, you have a family member who can care for you, or you are placed in a supportive foster home while your parents work on making your home a healthy and safe place to return to. If not, like so many other foster children, you face a long period of instability, shuttled from one foster home to another. While you are coping with the loss of your family, decisions about your life are discussed in the courtroom by people you do not know. Right now in Minnesota, more than 16,700 children are in foster care and face this kind of experience. Most of these children were removed from their homes because of mental, physical or sexual abuse, neglect or abandonment. When the state takes children from abusive or neglectful homes or they are abandoned, the children enter the child protection system, a confusing and complicated legal arena. For many, this is the beginning of an unstable and uncertain future. Having experienced profound trauma or neglect, children in foster care are especially vulnerable and need strong advocates to ensure that they are getting the services and support they need. Children have rights and protections under the law and deserve to have their opinions heard when decisions are being made about their lives. Children’s Law Center of Minnesota fulfills this critical role. Since 1995, CLC has provided free legal services to Minnesota youth in foster care. With the help of about 200 volunteer attorneys, CLC provides these professional legal services to more than 500 Minnesota foster children every year. How can you help? Donate today! CLC does not charge any legal fees to the children it represents. Donations from individuals, corporations and community groups ensure that CLC will be able to continue providing quality legal representation to foster children in Minnesota. By making a donation, you are helping us help the kids who need it most.
