Mission Statement

The Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) is a Saint Paul Minnesota based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1993 by Dr. Deborah Wexler. Our mission is to increase immunization rates and prevent disease throughout the United States. We create and distribute educational materials for healthcare professionals and the public that enhance the delivery of safe and effective immunization services. We work to improve national and state vaccine policy. IAC also facilitates communication about the safety, efficacy, and use of vaccines within the broad immunization community of patients, parents, healthcare organizations, and government health agencies.

About This Cause

The Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) plays a vital role in the nation's immunization efforts. Technical expertise • Immunization education is a highly technical activity. IAC staff must know with precision the complex details of a wide range of topics, including storage and handling of vaccines, screening patients for contraindications, vaccine administration techniques, dosing schedules, and others. • IAC staff hold 3 MD degrees, 2 PhDs, 1 DNP, 1 DDS, 1 JD, and 11 Master’s degrees. • IAC’s world-class level of expertise has made us a trusted and sought out resource. We give more than 100 presentations per year. • IAC’s Advisory Board members represent a virtual "who's who" of preeminent healthcare professionals from every major public and private national immunization organization. • State and federal agencies that formulate immunization policy have come to rely on IAC for analysis and expertise, as well as innovative solutions. Work product • Our main websites, www.immunize.org and www.vaccineinformation.org, average almost 30,000 visits per day. • IAC immunization education materials are aimed at healthcare professionals, parents, and patients with more than 3.5 million downloads occurring annually, including translations in up to 13 languages. • Our free weekly email news service, "IAC Express," is distributed to more than 50,000 opt-in subscribers, predominantly healthcare professionals dealing directly with patients every day. • IAC’s collection of the federally-required Vaccine Information Statements (VISs) and their translations have been designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the nation’s official repository. Visitors to immunize.org download more than 2.5 million translations annually, including translations in as many as 40 languages. Partnerships • IAC's unique and applauded continuous partnership with CDC since 1991 underlies our central role in helping coordinate projects throughout the U.S. immunization community at the national, state, and local levels. We are in the first year of our most recent five-year award. • We are partnering on a three-year national project to promote the use of Standing Orders Protocols in medical offices which will empower qualified clinical staff to vaccinate without a direct physician order for each patient. • We are partnering to increase meningococcal vaccination rates in 16-year-olds. • Along with CDC and the National Vaccine Program Office (NVPO), we host and manage the entire annual National Adult and Influenza Immunization Summit, comprised of more than 700 partners representing over 130 private and public organizations. Impact • IAC’s audiences include healthcare professionals in both the public and private sectors, vaccine advocates, policymakers, legislators, the media, the public, and others. • IAC is recognized as a natural center for development and management of complex immunization projects that cross multiple disciplines. • An example of the type of unique, broad, and high-level impact we often have is our recent campaign to focus healthcare providers’ attention on the importance of vaccinating adolescents at age 16. As a result of our collaborations with major partners, the official 2017 U.S. Immunization Schedule now designates the need for teens to have a vaccination visit at age 16.
