Mission Statement

Fair Trade is a movement that empowers farmers and workers to fight poverty in ways that improve lives and protect the environment. Founded in 1998, Fair Trade USA is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, third-party certifier and promoter of Fair Trade products in North America. Fair Trade USA's mission is to enable sustainable development and community empowerment by cultivating a more equitable global trade model that benefits farmers, workers, consumers, industry and the earth. We achieve our mission by empowering producers around the world with the business training, environmental knowledge, and capital investment necessary to create high-quality products that can compete in global markets, and by certifying and promoting Fair Trade products.

About This Cause

Fair Trade USA's social, environmental and economic standards promote safe, healthy working conditions and protect the environment. When farmers and workers are empowered, their additional income helps to build strong, thriving communities. Fair Trade USA currently impacts 1.5 million people in 70 different countries and works with over 1,000 U.S. and global companies to drive Fair Trade's impact. Our Vision: Fair Trade USA seeks to empower family farmers and workers around the world, while enriching the lives of those struggling in poverty. Rather than creating dependency on aid, we use a market-based approach that empowers farmers to get a fair price for their harvest, helps workers create safe working conditions, and protect the environment. Through direct, equitable trade, farming and working families are able to eat better, keep their kids in school, improve health and housing, and invest in the future. Keeping families, local economies, the natural environment, and the larger community strong today and for generations to come; these are the results we seek through Fair Trade.
