About This Cause

Established in 1999 by a small group of people in Minnesota, Give Us Wings is community-led and responsive to the needs of our partners, primarily women, who live in rural areas of Uganda. GUW provides services and training designed to build our partners’ capacity to lead and create opportunities for them to become self-sufficient. We work to promote gender equity, social unity and resiliency. Our current service area is in eastern Uganda, specifically in the districts of Tororo, Manafwa and Bugiri. Give Us Wings supports our Ugandan partners in the areas of Health Care, Education, and Economic Development. HEALTH CARE: GUW built and run St. John’s Kayoro Community Health Center, which has become an integral part of the community in an area where quality health care was sorely lacking. The clinic has been especially successful in offering a safe environment for prenatal care and childbirth. Other services offered at the clinic include immunizations, vitamin supplementation, deworming, family planning, and treatment for routine illnesses. The clinic has a full-time clinical officer and three nurses. At regular intervals, a “doctor day” is held, which brings a medical doctor to the clinic to see patients with more severe issues. Because of the long distance to any other medical facility, these days are extremely popular and can see long lines of patients. Finally, the clinic schedules several outreach activities each quarter in more rural areas, bringing health services and medicine to people who are unable to travel to the clinic. EDUCATION: Our Family to Family sponsorship program is a centerpiece of our work. The program enables donors in the US to sponsor a family in Uganda. The sponsorship covers 1) all expenses for one child (usually the youngest girl) to attend a high-ranking boarding school; 2) educational forums for families on such topics as financial management, healthy parenting, relationship building, and health and nutrition; 3) free health insurance at St. John’s clinic for up to 8 family members. Our goal is to holistically support and provide education for entire families in addition to supporting the formal education of one child. Regular visits from our Uganda staff ensure that the sponsored students are progressing well in their studies and staying healthy both physically and emotionally. Our students are regularly at the top of their classes and frequently maintain leadership roles in their schools. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Through our Entrepreneurship and Livelihoods Development program, we work with agricultural cooperatives in rural Uganda to help them increase household income. Co-ops are provided training as they form and register with the government, and then supported with additional training, equipment, and materials as they work together to achieve their goals for financial growth and sustainability. Co-ops in Uganda also serve as a savings and loan instrument for their members, offering small loans to people who would not be able to access loans from regular financial institutions. Give Us Wings employs two staff members in the Saint Paul, MN office and 17 staff members based in the Tororo, Uganda office all of whom are African natives.
