KINSHIP YOUTH MENTORING OF PRINCETON

Princeton, Minnesota, 55371 United States

Mission Statement

Kinship Youth Mentoring, matches carefully screened mentors to youth ages 5-15, who live in the Princeton Community. Mentors and Kinskids agree to be matched for a minimum of one year ( many of our matches have gone 5-7 yrs. Two went 12 years). Mentors meet with their Kinskids 6-10 hours a month. The purpose of mentoring is to encourage kids to develop their character, interests and capabilities. It also offers children one more adult they can depend on and provides opportunities they might not otherwise have. Kinship recruits, trains and stays connected to our matches to ensure they continue to meet and grow together. Kinship also provides group events and encourages community involvement. Kinship allows individuals 21 years older to mentor and also recruits families to mentor. Background checks are done on all volunteers working with children. The safety and well being of our Kinskids is our first priority.

About This Cause

Kinship has been mentoring kids in Princeton for twenty one years and has connected over 150 youth to adult mentors in that time. Besides our adult/Kinskids mentoring, Kinship began a Reading Buddies program in our local elementary school. Initially, we began this program with a first grade class. The second year the kids all moved to a second grade class (looped) and the 20 Reading Buddies moved with them. The third year the Reading Buddies returned to the new first grade group. However, in the fourth years, both teachers were assigned to second grade students. Since that time, we expanded from 20 volunteers to 44 every year since the 2005-2006 school year. Each of our Reading Buddies is assigned a second grade student and twice a month they meet for lunch and then go to the classroom and read together. In addition to the 44 volunteers there 10 volunteer subs. Each year there is a holiday party before winter break. Reading Buddies give their student a book as a gift. In the spring, a joint Pizza party is provided by a local business. On average Kinships has 75 adults volunteering time to the kids in our community. This number includes 20-25 mentors, 44 Reading Buddies, 11-14 Board of Directors and 5-10 miscellaneous volunteers. Since we began mentoring in 2001, we have matched 150 children. Many of our matches last 5-7 years. This program is a community based program and more that 90% of all funding comes from the Princeton Community individuals and businesses.
