Mission Statement
To engage with communities to critically analyze and raise consciousness of their circumstances and envision a path toward empowerment to achieve lasting transformation. We envision a Haiti where marginalized rural communities no longer see themselves as powerless citizens but as active agents of change.
About This Cause
COFHED is a MN based nonprofit organization. We are an innovative community engagement organization with roots in rural Haiti, mobilizing and equipping citizens to create a shared vision for a sustainable future. To date COFHED's significant achievements in community-led development include the following areas: primary, secondary, higher education and vocational training; economic development; health and nutrition; local infrastructure; water, sanitation and hygiene; agroforestry and environmental restoration; disaster preparedness; gender equity and justice. WHAT WE DO: COFHED has been partnering with communities in Southern Haiti since 2003. We engage with rural marginalized citizens in a process that: * Takes time to build bi-directional trusting relationships *Values community members and their capacity to act *Mobilizes community members through a collective, reflective, consciousness raising approach which encourages them to visualize their life differently *Is based on identifying, recognizing and building upon existing community resources and skills *Allows community members to drive the change *Encourages mindset change which results in both visible and invisible outcomes *Provides an intermediary for the community in partnering with outside organizations OUR FUTURE: The most exciting change has been the way residents see themselves. Belief in their ability to succeed has replaced a long-standing pervasive despair. Community leaders have become champions of COFHED's model of resident-led development. Now they are working in nearby villages; communities who have expressed a desire to partner with COFHED in order to replicate the successes they have witnessed. It is vital to seize this opportunity and invest in training members from other villages to extend and expand COFHED's model in southern Haiti and beyond!
