About This Cause

The Indian Land Tenure Foundation (“ILTF” or “Foundation”) is a national, community-based nonprofit organization established in 2002. ILTF is the only organization devoted to Indian land recovery and effective management on a national scale. The Foundation serves its long-term mission through four strategy areas: 1) EDUCATION: educate every Indian landowner about Indian land management, ownership and transference issues so that knowledge becomes power when decisions about land assets are made; 2) CREATE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY: increase economic assets of Indian landowners by gaining control of Indian lands and creating financial models that convert land into leverage for Indian owners; 3) INCREASE CULTURAL AWARENESS: use Indian land to help Indian people discover and maintain their culture; and 4) LEGAL REFORM: reform legal mechanisms related to recapturing the physical, cultural and economic assets for Indian people and strengthening the sovereignty of Indian land. Since inception in 2002, ILTF has, though grants (more than 225 grants), loans, investments and program services, directed $57.5 million toward land issues in Indian Country, while currently retaining total assets of $24.2 million. To date, ILTF has provided educational assistance, technical assistance and/or direct services to at least 50,000 individual Indian landowners from more than 400 tribes, while assisting in the recovery of approximately 40,000 acres. ILTF has working relationships with approximately 140 Native Nations at any one time and provides direct services to approximately 2,600 individual Indian people per year. At the request of the Indian community, ILTF also manages 24 designated and donor advised funds. In addition, ILTF has served as fiscal agent for several Indian start-up organizations. In partnership with the Native American Community Development Corporation, ILTF also created a subsidiary for-profit lending company, Indian Land Capital Company (ILCC), for financing tribal land purchases and development activities. ILTF has also created two additional subsidiary programs to fill needs in Indian Country: the National Indian Land Association (NTLA), a membership group of tribal land staff, and the National Indian Carbon Coalition (NICC), a technical assistance and marketing organization assisting tribes and Indian landowners with developing carbon credit projects and placement of the credits in carbon markets.
