About This Cause

Wards 7 & 8 (Far NE/Far SE) and Ward 5 (NE) DC communities have a rich history of arts & culture, personal achievement and community activism. Unfortunately, these same communities also experience some of the worst inner city living conditions. We work with youth and their caregivers helping them understand the harmful effects of drug use and risky sexual practices and empowering them to understand the local conditions and what they can do about it to positively change community norms as well as positively educate vendors, work with local government to change the laws and work with local law enforcement to increase greater awareness of and enforcement of existing laws, and work with local medical/health professionals to create greater awareness of the potential harmful health consequences. Bridging Resources in Communities, Inc. was founded in 2005 and has successfully partnered with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (HHS/SAMHSA) as well as the District of Columbia Department of Behavioral Health Substance Use Disorder Services Division. Our innovative and unique public-private partnerships which have been recognized locally, nationally, and even internationally (thanks to our work with the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy which connected us to the U.S. State Dept.) as prevention models/best practices for effective and sustainable drug-use prevention in urban settings. Specifically, with grassroots community support, we led the successful creation of and secured 10 years of federal government funding for the Ward 8 Drug-Free Coalition (2007 - 2017), we led the successful creation of and secured to date nine years of local government funding for the Wards 7 & 8 DC Prevention Center (2010 - 2019), and we led the successful creation and secured to date five years of federal government funding from two different funding sources for the Ward 5 Drug-Free Coalition (2014-2019). Our combined drug use prevention education activities which are a combination of smaller, targeted leadership training activities and larger health fairs/community forum activities have resulted in approximately 6,000 adults and 5,000 youth annually being served by our services, including a targeted, subgroup of 65 adult key leaders and 45 youth leaders annually trained in drug use prevention education as an effective tool to create positive changes in laws, policies, and community norms. We also helped DC health officials create the first of a kind in the nation multi-media awareness campaign relating the emerging synthetic drugs crisis in DC by bringing early attention to the problem and by helping to create effective images and messaging to for the campaign. https://k2zombiedc.com Our youth and adult leaders also created professional videos discussing our work and the significance of the synthetic drugs program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKbohl7cKCg https://vimeo.com/121417549 In addition, in partnership with the University of the District of Columbia, we helped them change federal statutory language enabling the school to secure more USDA/Land Grant University funding resources and assisting them in the creation of and weekly management of the school's annual Farmers Market (2007 - 2011). We also helped the Suitland Technology Education, Engagement Resource (STEER) Center, Inc. secure a USDA grant and launch their own annual Farmers Market in Suitland, MD (2012 - 2013). Your generous contribution is literally the lifeblood of our organization covering key operational costs not covered by other means. Thank you for helping us to create healthier DC communities!!!!
