Mission Statement
The mission of Two Rivers Public Charter School is to nurture a diverse group of students to become lifelong, active participants in their own education, develop a sense of self and community, and become responsible and compassionate members of society. Two Rivers PCS serves more than 700 Washington, D.C. students from preschool to 8th grade across two campuses in Wards 5 and 6. Two Rivers focuses on cross-disciplinary, hands-on explorations that place students at the heart of some of the real-world's most compelling challenges.
About This Cause
Two Rivers was incorporated in the District of Columbia as a 501(c)(3) non‐profit corporation in April 2003 and opened its doors to students in September 2004. Two Rivers' purpose is to provide a public education for students who reside within the boundaries of the city of the District of Columbia. Serving more than 700 early childhood, elementary, and middle school students, Two Rivers' EL Education model emphasizes cross-disciplinary, hands-on explorations that place students at the heart of some of the real-world's most compelling challenges. Through this educational model, Two Rivers students acquire the skills and knowledge they need while participating in a collective journey that invites them to engage in rich experiences that deepen in each successive grade. Two Rivers students receive rigorous, standards-based instruction in the core content areas of math, language arts, social studies, and science, as well as art, Spanish, drama, music, and physical education. Also embedded into instruction are specific school-wide social-emotional values that help maintain a safe, inclusive educational community while teaching students the skills needed to be adept communicators during classroom situations that often demand perseverance, imagination, and self-discipline. One of our points of pride is Two Rivers' clout and high performance marks. Over the past four years, Two Rivers has been recognized as one of the highest-performing schools in Washington, DC. Each year since 2010, Two Rivers has been designated a Tier One, high-performing school by the DC Public Charter School Board, one of only ten charter schools in the district to achieve these marks. Historically, Two Rivers has attracted more than 3,000 student applications, having among the longest waitlists in the district. The long wait-list and high demand fueled the Board of Trustees to help serve a greater student population. We opened a new preschool and elementary school for the 2015-16 academic year with an enrollment of 170 students -- making Two Rivers the first EL Education school in the nation to replicate. In 2020, Two Rivers opened a new, consolidated middle school. Today, we serve over 1,000 students.
