Mission Statement
Generate Health mobilizes and inspires the St. Louis region to advance racial equity in pregnancy outcomes, family well-being, and community health.
About This Cause
Generate Health believes St. Louis can be a more thriving region if we improve the health and well-being of our community’s moms, babies and families. Generate Health is committed to building a community where moms and babies thrive by inspiring and mobilizing the St. Louis region to advance racial equity in pregnancy outcomes, family well-being and community health. Formed 21 years ago, Generate Health is a diverse coalition of nearly 300 organizations and over 900 individuals who share the common goal to accelerate positive change for moms, children, families and the St. Louis region. Our partners include public health, hospitals, health centers, academic centers, community organizations, advocacy organizations, businesses and faith-based organizations. Generate Health is a trusted convener with maternal and child health content expertise rooted in utilization of data, and authentic centering of community. Generate Health accomplishes its mission and goals by uncovering the full picture of what impacts the health of moms and children, educating service providers and community leaders about critical issues in maternal and child health, advocating for improvements in policies and programs for women and children, and mobilizing the region around the most pressing needs. Generate Health’s builds equity and influences systems to work better for people of color by: • Illuminating the root causes of racial disparities in infant mortality and maternal health • Advocating for the redirection of resources to address racial disparities in infant mortality and maternal health • Catalyzing action within the ecosystem • Advancing regional accountability for equitable systems Our initiatives include: Healthy Equity: Working to attain health equity, where all people have reached the highest level of health, is at the core of all our work. Everyone should have the opportunity to make the choices that allow them to have the healthiest life possible. However, many families face a variety of barriers in the community that block them from having access to the things they need to thrive. Generate Health is building awareness of these community conditions and engaging new types of sectors in the discussion of maternal and child health to accelerate change in our region. Generate Health has developed the Social Determinants of Health Tour, an experiential learning tour that provides to health care providers and others insight into the historic, social and economic factors that have shaped parts of the St. Louis region. The goal of the tour is to increase participants’ understanding of and sensitivity to the lives and perspectives of patients and families from the communities visited and others like them to improve the quality and effectiveness of care. We offer a licensed version of the tour curriculum for institutions that seek to embed it into their broader cultural competency, diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Making Change Happen Leadership Academy, powered by Generate Health: The voice of community members is often missing from policy and systems development decisions. To change that, we formed the Making Change Happen Leadership Academy. This program is unique to St. Louis and trains community members to identify conditions and core issues in their neighborhoods that impact their health and plan strategies for addressing them. The program then helps participants build their leadership skills to advocate for the needs of moms and children and to bring positive change to their own neighborhoods and our region. Their personal stories have changed minds and inspired others to support the needs of women and children. Graduates of our program have used what they learned to change the votes of legislators toward policies that support families, including getting them to support Nathan’s Law to improve safety regulations for in-home daycares. Maternal and Infant Health: St. Louis is home to some of the best medical care in the country. Yet, too many babies in St. Louis are dying or born too small or too soon. In fact, infant death rates in parts of St. Louis City and County are worse than some developing countries. For babies to be born healthier, women need to attain health before, during and between pregnancy. Generate Health is bringing our community together in new ways to support the health and wellbeing of our moms and babies. Generate Health’s Fetal Infant Mortality Review combines medical data with interviews of families who experience the loss of a baby. This gives a full picture of the health, social, economic and safety issues that may have contributed to a baby’s death. The results and recommendations coming out of these reviews help service providers and regional planners better focus, align and plan their work related to infant health. FLOURISH St. Louis, powered by Generate Health: A multi-year, community-based initiative focuses on eliminating race disparities in infant mortality by 2033 by engaging and empowering the community and encouraging regional collaboration. There are many things that impact the health of moms and their babies, including housing conditions, jobs, access to health care, stress and access to healthy foods. Our cabinet of parents and leaders from the education, faith, business and health care communities are bringing all these pieces of this puzzle together to speed up change. Generate Health leads this initiative in St. Louis to align policies, programs and funding around a common agenda. Community-led funding is available to support priorities identified by the Community Leaders Cabinet (CLC). Perinatal Behavioral Health: Maternal behavioral health issues, such as depression, anxiety and addiction, directly contribute to poor outcomes for women and their infants. In St. Louis, we face high levels of depression and stress in women, a lack of appropriate behavioral health services offerings, and under-diagnosis in pregnant and new moms. Generate Health is improving maternal behavioral health to have a positive impact on our moms, children and community. Generate Health secured $2.6 million over six years to increase investment in this unmet need. This funding provided women with screening for depression and hundreds with referrals and treatment. Generate Health created and funds a network of 8 service provider organizations serving vulnerable women in St. Louis. Within the network, Generate Health is equipping the workforce with knowledge, skills, and referral partners to best serve their patients. It is resulting in more women accessing support services and reducing symptoms of depression. Fostering this level of coordination among resources makes the best use of systems of care available in St. Louis.
