About This Cause

Three underlying principles guide our mission: 1) The ACLU-MN Foundation is a nonpartisan, impartial organization; its policies do not embrace particular political philosophies. 2) The ACLU-MN Foundation may represent individuals with popular or unpopular points of view; the ACLU-MN by such representation, neither condones nor promotes their message, but defends against attacks on civil liberties. 3) The ACLU-MN Foundation is a nonprofit organization that does not solicit nor accept government funding. Its primary client is the Bill of Rights. The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota (ACLU-MN) was founded in 1952 as the Minnesota Civil Liberties Union, and the ACLU-MN Foundation was established in 1967 to support the tax-exempt activities of the ACLU-MN. The ACLU-MN is an affiliate of the ACLU and coordinates philosophies, approaches to litigation, and funding with the national organization. The ACLU-MN Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit entity.
