Mission Statement
Exploring, explaining and celebrating the world of plants.
About This Cause
The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is a vibrant, dynamic non-profit organization armed with a mission of exploring, explaining, and celebrating the world of plants. Our work serves to blur community boundaries and invites users to experience new gardens and programming in original, thoughtful and innovative ways. Our organizational goals are built on four pillars: education, culture, innovation and ecology. Our distinct spaces offer unique opportunities centered on these goals through events and programs focused on learning, respite and socializing for community members. The gardens are extrinsically valued by the community as a gorgeous setting for public gatherings and private events, and a space to experience world-class horticulture and cultural enrichment. We are uniquely positioned, geographically and programmatically, to be a community resource within the rapidly growing greater Des Moines area for all generations to experience innovative learning opportunities about their environment. Through educational opportunities for all ages and sectors of the community, we teach the importance of plants and the natural world. Youth-oriented classes, school outreach programs, field trips and summer camps provide a variety of mission-driven hands-on educational opportunities for our youngest audience group. Adult education offers one-of-a-kind ways to learn and hone gardening skills while expressing creativity. Our youth, adult and family programs address the need to make learning fun; to share the importance of plants and our environment in a way that all age groups can understand. We believe in life-long learning, and that it is never too late to become fascinated with nature. We take our roles seriously to not only deliver the community the beautification horticulture affords, but also to utilize this natural amenity as a living, breathing classroom to illuminate how every individual is impacted by plants in their daily lives.
