Mission Statement

The YMCA's mission is to strengthen our community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The Mission for the YMCA of Washington Community YMCA has remained consistent since its foundation in 1924. The Y offers the programs we do for a reason. Young people need safe and enriching environments to try new things, develop skills, meet new people and show what they’re capable of. Achieving and maintaining health in spirit, mind and body makes for a richer life and giving back to neighbors and those in need is our responsibility as neighbors, colleagues and citizens.

About This Cause

Youth Development: Nurturing the potential of every child and teen. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the Y, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. Healthy Living: Improving the nation’s health and well-being In communities across the nation, the Y is a leading voice on health and well-being. With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, millions of youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body. Social Responsibility: Giving back and providing support to our neighbors. The Y movement has been involved in character development from the beginning, emerging with four “core values” of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Our core values are incorporated into all of our programs and services to ensure that our members are able to learn, grow and thrive. Our commitment to character development strengthens our communities and the people we serve by building on this commitment and making it part of our everyday activities here at the Y. The four character values are: CARING (red to represent the heart):To love others, to be sensitive to the well-being of others, to help others. HONESTY (blue to represent “true blue”):To tell the truth, to act in such a way that you are worthy of trust, to have integrity, making sure your choices match your values. RESPECT (yellow to represent the “golden rule”):To treat others as you would have them treat you; to value the worth of every living being, including yourself. RESPONSIBILITY (green to represent the environment and money):To do what is right, what you ought to do; to be accountable for your behavior and obligations.
